Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) is one of the most aggressive and deadly type of cancer, with an extremely low five-year overall survival rate. To date, current treatment options primarily involve various chemotherapies, which often prove ineffecti ...

Suppression of chronic Arabidopsis immune responses is a widespread but typically strain-specific trait across the major bacterial lineages of the plant microbiota. We show by phylogenetic analysis and in planta associations with representative strains tha ...

Organometallic and coordination complexes have shown potential and found applications as therapeutics in treating a variety of diseases, from cancer to microbial infections. Metals offer distinct therapeutic opportunities compared to traditional organic dr ...

Key cellular functions depend on the transduction of extracellular mechanical signals by specialized membrane receptors, including adhesion G-protein coupled receptors (aGPCRs). While recent structural studies support aGPCR activation through shedding of t ...

The last 50 years have witnessed extraordinary developments in understanding mechanisms of carcinogenesis, synthesized as the hallmarks of cancer. Despite this logical framework, our understanding of the molecular basis of systemic manifestations and the u ...

Antibody-mediated receptor activation is successfully used to develop medical treatments. If the activation induces a pathological response, such antibodies are also excellent tools for defining molecular mechanisms of target receptor malfunction and desig ...

Objective: Malignant pleural mesothelioma is a fatal disease and a clinical challenge, as few effective treatment modalities are available. Previous evidence links the gut microbiome to the host immunoreactivity to tumors. We thus evaluated the impact of a ...

Existing organoid models fall short of fully capturing the complexity of cancer because they lack sufficient multicellular diversity, tissue-level organization, biological durability and experimental flexibility. Thus, many multifactorial cancer processes, ...

Increasing evidence suggests that the muscle stem cell (MuSC) pool is heterogeneous. In particular, a rare subset of PAX7-positive MuSCs that has never expressed the myogenic regulatory factor MYF5 displays unique self-renewal and engraftment characteristi ...

Aging compromises hematopoietic and immune system functions, making older adults especially susceptible to hematopoietic failure, infections and tumor development, and thus representing an important medical target for a broad range of diseases. During agin ...

Small-molecule responsive protein switches are powerful tools for controlling cellular processes. These switches are designed to respond rapidly and specifically to their inducer. They have been used in numerous applications, including the regulation of ge ...

People living with human immunodeficiency virus (PLWH) have significantly increased risk for cardiovascular disease in part due to inflammation and immune dysregulation. Clonal hematopoiesis of indeterminate potential (CHIP), the age-related acquisition an ...

c-MAF, highly expressed in villus small intestinal enterocytes, coordinates transcriptional programs for nutrient absorption. Enterocyte-specific c-MAF inactivation impairs dietary lipid handling but also leads to tuft cell expansion and adaptive gut lengt ...

Human fetal progenitor tenocytes (hFPT) produced in defined cell bank systems have recently been characterized and qualified as potential therapeutic cell sources in tendon regenerative medicine. In view of further developing the manufacture processes of s ...

Nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) is a chronic liver disease associated with dysregulation of liver metabolism and inflammation. G-protein coupled bile acid receptor 1 (TGR5) is a cell surface receptor that is involved in multiple metabolic pathways. How ...

Coupling DNA sensing to the initiation of immune responses necessitates auxiliary control mechanisms to avoid autoimmunity. A key factor is the exonuclease TREX1, which antagonizes DNA-mediated activation of cGAS. Two studies, by Mohr et al. (2021) and Zho ...

The optimization of therapeutic antibodies is time-intensive and resource-demanding, largely because of the low-throughput screening of full-length antibodies (approximately 1 x 10(3) variants) expressed in mammalian cells, which typically results in few o ...
