In the last few years, stroke ranked as the second most common cause of death and is the third most significant condition affecting disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) worldwide. Being the most prevalent and quality of life impacting post-stroke symptom ...

Saliency models are image-based prediction models that estimate human visual attention. Such models, when applied to architectural spaces, could pave the way for design decisions where visual attention is taken into account. In this study, we tested the pe ...

Designing architectural façades that allow sufficient daylight to create visually comfortable and pleasant environments is a challenging aspect of building design. It requires accounting for visual comfort and discomfort glare risks and understanding the f ...

This article presents assessment methods for the hydromorphological effectiveness of sediment augmentation measures downstream of dams. First, we describe different ways of quantifying hydromorphological effectiveness based on typical objectives of sedimen ...

Skyscrapers or glass towers are an extremely common model throughout the world. In the current context of climate change and resource depletion, we need to develop new postures towards these objects, especially for existing buildings that are becoming obso ...

Inhalation exposure to elevated concentrations of airborne particulate matter is a public health concern. Assessment of exposure can be enhanced through better knowledge of source-receptor relationships, which can be characterized through the inhalation in ...

While there is a growing use of complex facade designs in contemporary architecture worldwide and across Europe, little is known about the perceptual effects of these facades and the resulting daylight patterns on occupants, or about how such effects might ...

Improving indoor lighting conditions at the workplace has the potential to support proper circadian entrainment of hormonal rhythms, sleep, and well-being. We tested the effects of optimized dynamic daylight and electric lighting on circadian phase of mela ...

With the growing awareness about ipRGC-influenced light (IIL) responses, design applications related to these responses are flourishing. To compare design options and optimize lighting conditions for building occupants, lighting simulations are typically u ...

The concept of sustainability is growing in importance for local urban governance, and indicator-based assessments represent a popular means for its operationalization. While much effort has been spent developing the technical aspects of these assessments, ...

Learning to predict accurately from a few data samples is a central challenge in modern data-hungry machine learning. On natural images, human vision typically outperforms deep learning approaches on few-shot learning. However, we hypothesize that aerial a ...

The spectral sensitivity of the average human eye in photopic conditions is represented by the photopic luminosity function V (λ). The CIE has established the photopic luminosity functions for the 2o and 10o visual fields for a standard observer applicable ...

: Occupants’ visual comfort in an indoor space strongly depend on the quantity and quality of the daylight inside the space which can be altered with the type of window glazing. In this study, we compared the visual comfort perception of participants with ...

The minimum amount of shear reinforcement to be provided in reinforced concrete members has been a topic of debate and research for decades without reaching a consensus. Defining such values is however instrumental to build in an economic manner and to saf ...

Avoiding discomfort glare is one of the critical aspects of maintaining visual comfort, which significantly influences occupants' overall satisfaction with their indoor environment. Discomfort glare prediction models have been developed for various lightin ...

The use of daylight in buildings is important because it contributes to energy savings by reducing the use of electric lighting and space heating. It also impacts on biological functions and on well-being. Indeed, light not only allows vision, but has non- ...

Light enables to see the world around us, while playing a key role in our biological functioning. During the last decades, light has become an important research topic for chronobiologists and neuroscientists, and their findings are increasingly interwoven ...

A growing area of research focuses on the relationship between ocular light exposure and the non-visual responses. In order to accelerate research on this topic and improve building design, reliable spectral simulation tools are needed. This study aims at ...
