The oxygen isotope compositions of fossil biocalcites, such as foraminifera, bivalves, brachiopods, and belemnites have allowed for reconstructions of sea surface and deep ocean temperatures throughout the Phanerozoic and constitute the most important reco ...

Otoliths are calcium carbonate components of the stato-acoustical organ responsible for hearing and maintenance of the body balance in teleost fish. During their formation, control over, e.g., morphology and carbonate polymorph is influenced by complex ins ...

The paleoseawater temperature record from the oxygen isotope compositions of fossil foraminifera tests may be biased by up to about 1 degrees C due to grain-boundary diffusion alone, according to isotope exchange experiments on foraminifera tests. The oxyg ...

Plasma membranes represent pharmacokinetic barriers for the passive transport of site-specific drugs within cells. When engineered nanoparticles (NPs) are considered as transmembrane drug carriers, the plasma membrane composition can affect passive NP inte ...

One of the most conserved traits in the evolution of biomineralizing organisms is the taxon-specific selection of skeletal minerals. All modern scleractinian corals are thought to produce skeletons exclusively of the calcium-carbonate polymorph aragonite. ...

It was argued that, in contrast to all known modern scleractinian corals that form aragonite skeletons, the original mineralogy of the Cretaceous "Coelosmilia" (ca. 70-65 Ma) was calcite during a period when the Mg2+/Ca2+ ratio of the seawater was presumab ...

Oxygen isotope compositions of calcite foraminifera tests are considered to be a robust palaeotemperature proxy at earth-surface conditions, where diffusion is slow. Recrystallization of tests during diagenesis may be optically identified and is often the ...

Interpretation of biomineralization processes based solely on the end product - the skeleton - may seem abreakneck task. This is because the biologically controlled mineralization involves cascades of intermediatephases and the activity of a myriad of orga ...

Biological mineralized tissues are hybrid materials with complex hierarchical architecture composed of biominerals often embedded in an organic matrix. The atomic-scale comprehension of surfaces and organo-mineral interfaces of these biominerals is of para ...

Unicellular algae play important roles in the biogeochemical cycles of numerous elements, particularly through the biomineralization capacity of certain species (e.g., coccolithophores greatly contributing to the "organic carbon pump" of the oceans), and u ...

Oxygen-isotope compositions of fossilised planktonic and benthic foraminifera tests are used as proxies for surface-and deep-ocean paleotemperatures, providing a continuous benthic record for the past 115 Ma. However, visually imperceptible processes can a ...

Foraminifera are ubiquitous eukaryotic protists inhabiting all types of marine environments. The chemical and isotopic compositions of their carbonate tests are commonly used as proxies for paleo-environmental conditions. However, while foraminifera repres ...

Changes in seawater chemistry have affected the evolution of calcifying marine organisms, including their skeletal polymorph (calcite versus aragonite), which is believed to have been strongly influenced by the Mg/Ca ratio at the time these animals first e ...

Today coral reefs are threatened by changes to seawater conditions associated with rapid anthropogenic global climate change. Yet, since the Cenozoic, these organisms have experienced major fluctuations in atmospheric CO2 levels (from greenhouse conditions ...

The micro-and ultra-structural skeletal growth dynamics of the scleractinian coral Pocillopora damicornis (Linnaeus 1758) was studied with pulsed Sr-86-labeling and high spatial resolution NanoSIMS isotopic imaging. Average extension rates for the two basi ...

This paper reports the results of the first dynamic labeling experiment with regenerating spines of sea urchins Paracentrotus lividus using the stable isotope Mg-26 and NanoSIMS high-resolution isotopic imaging, which provide a direct information about the ...

The concentrations of 16 trace elements were investigated and compared for the first time in the digestive and excreting tissues of two Nautilus species (Cephalopoda: Nautiloidea) from two geologically contrasted areas: (1) N. macromphalus from New Caledon ...

Autofluorescence (AF) bronchoscopy is a useful tool for early cancer detection. However, the mechanisms involved in this diagnosis procedure are poorly understood. We present a clinical autofluorescence imaging study to assess the depth of the principal co ...
