The electrification of the transport sector is a key element in decarbonizing our societies. However, energy systems will have to cope with additional electricity demand due to the charging needs of electric vehicles (EVs) together with the integration of ...

To support the decarbonisation of the power sector and offset the volatility of a system with high levels of renewables, there is growing interest in residential Demand-Side Management (DSM) solutions. Traditional DSM strategies require consumers to active ...

The aluminium sector relies on natural gas for the conversion of recycled scrap into new feedstock, which results in substantial atmospheric emissions. Hydric resources are also impacted, as they serve as heat sinks for the waste heat generated during the ...

In light of the challenges posed by climate change and the goals of the Paris Agreement, electricity generation is shifting to a more renewable and decentralized pattern, while the operation of systems like buildings is increasingly electrified. This calls ...

This research aims to compare the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions of new neighbourhood projects near the Rhône River in France and Switzerland. The study considers the influence of the river on energy demand and resilience to climate change of 12 project-ba ...

The current study performs the thermodynamic and life-cycle assessments (LCA) of a novel charging station in two system designs. The goal is to design an efficient charging station for electric vehicles with high efficiencies and low environmental impacts ...

The energy integration of brewery plants and urban agglomerations has many benefits in terms of rational energy use and reduced environmental impact, especially during scenarios of uncertain supply chain and volatile market prices. In fact, the diversifica ...

Solar photovoltaics (PV) will play an important role in decarbonising the energy system. To date, most assessments of PV transition pathways focus on least-cost aspects, without neither considering the time needed to achieve a substantial PV deployment, no ...

EC RF power sources will play a major role in the future operation of large scale tokamaks (ITER, DEMO). A 1MW/170GHz gyrotron is the standard RF power unit considered for ITER. Even though the efficiency of such devices has been significantly increased th ...

The aluminium remelting industry relies on natural gas to transform recycled aluminium into aluminium feedstock, entailing significant atmospheric emissions. Hydric resources are also affected as they are used as sinks of waste heat from the casting proces ...

The process synthesis and optimization methods used in this work include simulation of biomass gasification, hydrogen and synthetic natural gas production, and jet fuel production via a Fisher Tropsch unit. An energy integration approach, carried out by th ...

The depletion of fossil fuel sources has encouraged the authorities to use renewable resources such as wind energy to generate electricity. A backup/storage system can improve the performance of wind turbines, due to fluctuations in power demand. The novel ...

Energy efficiency is crucial for the sustainable operation of all industrial and urban sectors. However, practicing engineers have seldom access to open-source tools that can readily evaluate and compare scenarios in terms of energy consumption, cost, and ...

A shift from fossil-based energy and products to more sustainable alternatives is essential to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and associated climate change impacts. Biomass represents a promising alternative for providing fuels and carbon-based products w ...

The shipping industry was responsible for about 3% of global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in 2018. In this context, the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) has established stringent targets to reduce GHG emissions by at least 50% by 2050 compared t ...

This dataset complements the article "Frequency regulation with storage: On losses and profits" by Dirk Lauinger, François Vuille, and Daniel Kuhn, available at https://arxiv.org/abs/2306.02987. The dataset contains the following files: 1.

Governments are setting ambitious targets to tackle the issue of global warming by switching to renewable energy sources and reducing CO2 -emissions. For example, as announced in November 2020, Canada aims to achieve net zero GHG emissions by 2050. Large c ...

Europe is currently transitioning from fossil energy sources to renewable generation of electric power. Although fundamental to reach net-zero targets, intermittent renewables are disrupting conventional methods used in operational planning and design of p ...

The paper describes a case study on the design of district energy infrastructure for the green-field project of the Vale de Santo Antonio (Lisbon, Portugal). The methodology is based on a novel framework built on the sequential integration of three softwar ...

Ecological awareness, pressing climate considerations and rising need for soil stabilization push forward the quest for alternative solutions in geotechnical engineering such as Microbially Induced Carbonate Precipitation (MICP). Precipitated crystals serv ...
