In recent years, an increasing number of studies have reported on forest declines and shifts in species composition in response to changing climatic conditions (Rigling et al. 2012). The intensification of droughts through rising evaporative demand (i.e., ...

This study presents a comparative analysis of various configurations for sustainable olefins production via chemical recycling of plastic/biomass wastes, integrating CO2 capture, storage and management technologies. The co-gasification, methanol synthesis ...

Personalized Environmental Control Systems (PECS) can improve both comfort and energy efficiency by shifting indoor climate control toward localized, occupant-tailored comfort, unlike conventional systems that condition entire, partly unoccupied spaces uni ...

Six Electron Cyclotron (EC) launchers are currently envisaged to be installed at the Equatorial Ports (EP) of the EU DEMO Tokamak with the purpose of delivering up to 130 MW for plasma bulk heating (BH), thermal instability (TI) control and magnetohydrodyn ...

Coral reefs are crucial for biodiversity and provide vital resources for humankind. But despite such a central role, they are confronted to increasing threats linked to climate change, pollution, and local stressors. To ensure effective conservation, effic ...

Urban surfaces absorb heat, raising ambient temperature and contributing to urban overheating, greenhouse gas emissions, environmental pollution, energy hikes, and heat-related health issues. Passive Daytime Radiative Coolers (PDRC), available in white or ...

Seasonal storage of thermal energy has the potential to both significantly reduce the total energy requirements for heating and cooling of buildings, and also allow for the flexibility to store thermal energy from intermittent sources. With approximately h ...

The global energy sector stands at a critical juncture, with the imperative shift towards renewable energy sources posing challenges and opportunities for existing infrastructure and societal norms. This thesis explores the multifaceted dynamics of transit ...

Heatwaves and soil droughts are increasing in frequency and intensity, leading many tree species to exceed their thermal thresholds, and driving wide-scale forest mortality. Therefore, investigating heat tolerance and canopy temperature regulation mechanis ...

As humanity grapples with the escalating challenges of climate change, the discipline of architecture finds itself at a critical juncture. The urgency of the situation demands that schools of architecture not only contribute to envisioning more serene futu ...

Switzerland's Energy Strategy 2050 promotes the use of renewable energy resources. Hydropower and solar energy peak in the summertime, while the demand for energy increases in the wintertime, which creates a seasonal mismatch between energy production and ...

Arctic fjords are experiencing rapid environmental shifts due to climate change, which may have significant impacts on marine biodiversity and ecosystem functioning. However, the impact of climate change on fjord biodiversity is difficult to quantify given ...

Microsupercapacitors (MSCs) are attractive for use as energy devices to power wearables, IoT, and other small microsystems. Additive fabrication of these devices will facilitate easy integration into a range of ubiquitous microsystem platforms. In this wor ...

Modern energy infrastructure has evolved into an integrated electricity and natural gas systems (IEGS), which often encompasses multiple geographically-diverse energy areas. This paper focuses on the decentralized adjustable robust operation problem for mu ...

Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cells (PEMFCs) are known as a promising alternative for internal combustion engines (ICE) to reduce pollution. Recent progress of PEMFCs is heading towards achieving higher power densities, reducing the refueling time, and dec ...

Electricity production and consumption must be balanced for the electrical grid. However, the rapidly growing intermittent power sources are now challenging the supply-demand balance, leading to large flexibility needs for grid management. The plant integr ...
