The cavity method is one of the cornerstones of the statistical physics of disordered systems such as spin glasses and other complex systems. It is able to analytically and asymptotically exactly describe the equilibrium properties of a broad range of mode ...

Invariant solutions of the Navier-Stokes equations play an important role in the spatiotemporally chaotic dynamics of turbulent shear flows. Despite the significance of these solutions, their identification remains a computational challenge, rendering many ...

The seismic assessment of existing steel structures necessitates the development of practice- oriented engineering models for use in nonlinear static and dynamic analysis procedures. These models should encompass the full range of the anticipated nonlinear ...

The current research focuses on the prediction of the maximum axial compression load a cylindrical shell is able to bear. This maximum axial compression load is the value at which a cylindrical shell loses stability and abruptly buckles. After the buckling ...

Steel beams with reduced beam section (RBS) are often used as part of prequalified connections in seismic regions. However, RBS connections are not as common in Europe. Reasons relate to easiness in fabrication, which requires on-site welding, and the seis ...

Thin beams made of magnetorheological elastomers embedded with hard-magnetic particles (hard-MREs) are capable of large deflections under an applied magnetic field. We propose a comprehensive framework, comprising a beam model and 3D finite element modelin ...

Research conducted after the 1994 Northridge earthquake in the U.S. and the 1995 Kobe earthquake in Japan led to the development of today's pre-qualified beam-to-column connections for capacity-designed steel moment resisting frames (MRFs). Welded moment c ...

With the advent of performance-based earthquake engineering (PBEE), the need for reliable prediction of earthquake-induced collapse of structures is essential. Despite the significant progress that has been made towards this goal, there are several hurdles ...

Numerical models that can simulate coupled geometric instabilities in steel beam-columns are required for the seismic assessment of certain steel moment-resisting frames. Reliably simulating coupled instabilities requires that the steel material is precise ...

Tensegrity structures have been widely utilized as lightweight structures due to their high stiffness-to-mass and strength-to-mass ratios. Minimal mass design of tensegrity structures subject to external loads and specific constraints (e.g., member yieldin ...

Spatiotemporally chaotic dynamics of transitional plane Couette flow may give rise to regular turbulent-laminar stripe patterns with a large-scale pattern wavelength and an oblique orientation relative to the laminar flow direction. A recent dynamical syst ...

This paper examines the influence of framing action and slab continuity on the hysteretic behavior of composite steel moment-resisting frames (MRFs) by means of high-fidelity continuum finite-element (CFE) analyses of two-bay subsystems and typical crucifo ...

We present X-shells, a new class of deployable structures formed by an ensemble of elastically deforming beams coupled through rotational joints. An X-shell can be assembled conveniently in a flat configuration from standard elastic beam elements and then ...

We study assemblies of convex rigid blocks regularly arranged to approximate a given freeform surface. Our designs rely solely on the geometric arrangement of blocks to form a stable assembly, neither requiring explicit connectors or complex joints, nor re ...

When laminar shear flows in large wall-bounded domains transition to turbulence, the flow exhibits spatio-temporally chaotic dynamics. Despite its chaotic dynamics, the flow may self-organize into characteristic spatially periodic patterns of unknown origi ...

We consider the Langevin dynamics of a many-body system of interacting particles in d dimensions, in a very general setting suitable to model several out-of-equilibrium situations, such as liquid and glass rheology, active self-propelled particles, and gla ...

The rotational flexibility of column base connections is commonly assumed to be detrimental to the seismic response of steel moment-resisting frames (MRFs) because it increases story drift demands and promotes soft-story formation by lowering the point of ...

Previous studies have investigated the slab effects on the cyclic behavior of composite beams in moment-resisting frames. Of interest in this paper, is the slab contribution to the flexural strength and effective stiffness of the beam. The former influence ...

In countries of low to moderate seismicity, such as Switzerland, unreinforced masonry (URM) is mainly used in residential buildings due to its good insulation capacity and fire resistance along with a fair compressive strength. URM walls however show a lim ...

Short beams are the key building blocks in many compliant mechanisms. Hence, deriving a simple yet accurate model of their elastokinematics is an important issue. Since the Euler-Bernoulli beam theory fails to accurately model these beams, we use the Timos ...
