The fatigue provisions for bridge design in North America and Europe are highly simplified for the sake of practical implementation, in comparison with the state of the art in understanding of the true fatigue behavior. Historically, one significant simpli ...

The local undercut defects at the weld toe provide a potential initiation site for fatigue cracks and significantly impact the structure's fatigue strength. The influence of continuous undercut depth on fatigue performance is widely studied, but the resear ...

The examination of bridges under service loading is key for understanding their condition and thus for their sustainable and efficient use. The need to extend the service duration of existing bridges is increasing, and therefore, efficient tools for examin ...

The objective of this thesis is to develop knowledge and methods to prevent fatigue failure of bridges. The Fatigue Limit State is investigated from both the demand (S) and resistance (R) side. The S-part focuses on reduction of uncertainties through monit ...

Although Selective Laser Melting (SLM) currently revolutionizes the way parts are being manufactured, certain process inherent limitations such as accumulation of residual stresses and increased porosity content can lead to a decrease in fatigue life of pr ...

A recently novel strain-based approach recently proposed by Remes (Remes 2013) for the fatigue strength modelling of welded steel joints is extended here to consider multiaxial loading conditions and three dimensions finite element models. Only the first s ...

Welding of steel plates is accompanied by residual stresses that increase as the constraint provided by the welded components becomes greater. Consequently, crack initiation has been reported after welding thick plates due to the high residual stresses dev ...

The effect of the stress ratio (R = sigma(min)/sigma(max)) on the fatigue behavior of (+/- 45)(2s) angle-ply glass/epoxy composite laminates was investigated by comparing their mechanical, thermal, and optical properties under the stress ratio of 0.5 with ...

The case study of the fatigue safety examination of the 120 years old steel riveted bridge carrying a single railway track on two main girders is presented. The overall assessment according to the Swiss Standard SIA 269 for existing structures indicated su ...

There is a significant need to examine precisely the conditions of concrete road bridges because of the increasing traffic and axle loads and the fact that most existing bridges were not designed with respect to fatigue. In-situ investigations are challeng ...

Additive Manufacturing (AM) in whole and especially Selective Laser Melting (SLM) are already making a revolution in the way parts are designed and manufactured with the ability to produce lightweight parts with unprecedented complex geometries which are o ...

The fatigue safety of the reinforced concrete deck slab of a sixty-year-old steel-concrete road viaduct as well as the riveted steel girders of a 130 year old railway bridge was questioned based on the results of conventional assessment consisting in "re-c ...

Welded details in steel bridges are subjected to fatigue lives up to 200.10(6) cycles due to traffic loads. While the majority of these stress ranges are below the Constant Amplitude Fatigue Limit (CAFL), some few high stress cycles can trigger the start o ...

The recent development of high-strength (HSS) weldable steels has enlarged the range of design alternatives for the optimization of high-head steel-lined pressure tunnels and shafts (SLPT&S) in the hydropower industry. With the liberalization of the Europe ...

In Eurocode standards, three verification schemes are proposed for fatigue design under variable amplitude loadings: 1) Based on constant amplitude fatigue limit; 2) Based on constant amplitude equivalent stress range at 2.10 cycles; 3) Based on accumulate ...

Modern bridge construction all over Europe in the last decades, has highlighted the importance of steel solutions for the design of bridges. Steel bridges have become slender and lighter with the generalisation of welded connections. These features increas ...

A numerical modeling approach is proposed to assess the effectiveness of automatic submerged arc welding procedures for steel plates with thickness larger than 50 mm. The scope of study includes partial joint penetration butt welds, their numerical analysi ...

For fatigue life estimation as well as for fatigue testing analysis of welded structures by local stresses approaches, the stress concentration factor (SCF) at the weld must be known. Full penetration butt welded joints are extensively used in steel struct ...

Tubular elements are used in steel structures not only for bracing of other members but also as cross girders diaphragms. They are a competitive solution both due to the lightweight and structural efficiency. Slotted tube-to-plate connections are the natur ...

In this paper research work on welded butt weld connections between hot-rolled seamless tubes and steel castings are presented. Comparison is made between different weld preparations for the butt welds including different steel grades, repair methods, the ...
