Road bridge and fatig limit; monitoring, traffic simulation and damage calculation

Résumé

Design code value for traffic load is based on real measurements such as Weight In Motion. The Venoge bridge is located near the Denges WIM station, and it is equipped with strain gauges: it is therefore a perfect subject for this study. The aim of this thesis is to directly link the WIM traffic recorded at the station In Denges with the strain gauges data from the Venoge bridge. This would allow an evaluation of the validity of the WIM data and also give an estimation of the relative model error of a bridge model regarding fatigue analysis.

Stress–strain analysis

Stress–strain analysis (or stress analysis) is an engineering discipline that uses many methods to determine the stresses and strains in materials and structures subjected to forces. In continuum mechanics, stress is a physical quantity that expresses the internal forces that neighboring particles of a continuous material exert on each other, while strain is the measure of the deformation of the material. In simple terms we can define stress as the force of resistance per unit area, offered by a body against deformation.

Validity (statistics)

Validity is the main extent to which a concept, conclusion or measurement is well-founded and likely corresponds accurately to the real world. The word "valid" is derived from the Latin validus, meaning strong. The validity of a measurement tool (for example, a test in education) is the degree to which the tool measures what it claims to measure. Validity is based on the strength of a collection of different types of evidence (e.g. face validity, construct validity, etc.) described in greater detail below.

Validité externe

La validité externe d'une expérience scientifique désigne la capacité de ses conclusions à être généralisées à des contextes non-expérimentaux. Une expérience a une grande validité externe dès lors que ses résultats permettent de comprendre des phénomènes hors du laboratoire. À l'inverse, elle manque de validité externe si les conclusions que l'on peut en tirer ne sont valables que pour des conditions expérimentales restrictives.
