The probability of detecting technosignatures (i.e., evidence of technological activity beyond Earth) increases with their longevity, or the time interval over which they manifest. Therefore, the assumed distribution of longevities has some bearing on the ...

Artificial intelligence (AI) is increasingly used in an ever larger number of industries. Alongside this development, however, abundant works argue that AI-driven systems are lacking in terms of safety, ethics and transparency. As a direct consequence, the ...

Founders benefit from identifying with their founding teams because identification facilitates cooperation in the team, aligns founders' actions with the norms and interests of the team, and, ultimately, enhances team performance. High identification with ...

We study socio-political systems in representative democracies. Motivated by problems that affect the proper functioning of the system, we build computational methods to answer research questions regarding the phenomena occurring in them. For each phenomen ...

Spontaneous capillary imbibition is a classical problem in interfacial fluid dynamics with a broad range of applications, from microfluidics to agriculture. Here we study the duration of the cross-over between an initial linear growth of the imbibition fro ...

Some governance functions traditionally performed by humans are increasingly informed and sometimes automatically executed by machine learning algorithms (governance by machine learning) to benefit society. Therefore, it is necessary to think also about th ...

The concept of sustainability is growing in importance for local urban governance, and indicator-based assessments represent a popular means for its operationalization. While much effort has been spent developing the technical aspects of these assessments, ...

The European Union law-making process is an instance of a peer- production system. We mine a rich dataset of law edits and intro- duce models predicting their adoption by parliamentary committees. Edits are proposed by parliamentarians, and they can be in ...

Common property summer pastures constitute longstanding evidence that the tragedy of the commons can be prevented through self-organization. As a byproduct of their sustainable governance, high nature value farming systems with well-integrated patchy lands ...

This thesis consists of three parts that study separate subjects in corporate finance and corporate governance. The overarching theme is ownership by CEOs and other insiders. In the first part, which is co-authored work with Rüdiger Fahlenbrach, René M. ...

A body of law is an example of a dynamic corpus of text documents that are jointly maintained by a group of editors who compete and collaborate in complex constellations. Our goal is to develop predictive models for this process, thereby shedding light on ...

In the Freudian theory of the psychical apparatus, the introduction from the 1920s onward of the second drive dualism appears as a major turning point. The idea of a "death drive," first expressed in Beyond the Pleasure Principle (Freud, 1920), is generall ...

We present a microscopic theory of heat and particle transport of an interacting, low-temperature Bose- Einstein condensate in a quantum point contact. We show that, in contrast to charged, fermionic superconductors, bosonic systems feature tunneling proces ...

We build a dynamic agency model in which the agent controls both current earnings via short-term investment and firm growth via long-term investment. Under the optimal contract, agency conflicts can induce short- and long-term investment levels beyond firs ...

One effect of the COVID-19 crisis has been to require policymakers to go through the various stages of the risk governance process under conditions of high stress and compressed timescales. In this article we use our risk governance framework to outline th ...

Empirical observations suggest that consumers' propensity towards sharing varies with culture and the individuals' socio-demographic characteristics. In an economy with overlapping generations of heterogeneous consumers, we study optimal dynamic selling by ...

When governments act as owners of state-owned enterprises (SOEs), they are both principal and agent at the same time. The literature on steering SOEs has mainly focused on the government as the principal that must control SOEs. However, the government is a ...

Environmental transport processes are highly coupled with the shape of landscapes. Modern catchment analysis with high-resolution data and huge computational powers demand more detailed within-cell metrics for surface evolution modeling. This dissertation ...

Density, speed and energy efficiency of integrated circuits have been increasing exponentially for the last four decades following Moore's law. However, power and reliability pose several challenges to the future of technology scaling. Approximate computin ...

With ever greater computational resources and more accessible software, deep neural networks have become ubiquitous across industry and academia. Their remarkable ability to generalize to new samples defies the conventional view, which holds that complex, ...
