Otoliths are calcium carbonate components of the stato-acoustical organ responsible for hearing and maintenance of the body balance in teleost fish. During their formation, control over, e.g., morphology and carbonate polymorph is influenced by complex ins ...

Viral delivery of exogenous coding sequences into the inner ear has the potential for therapeutic benefit for patients suffering genetic or acquired hearing loss. To devise improved strategies for viral delivery, we investigated two injection techniques, r ...

Inner ear imaging is important for the assessment of hearing disorders. A major cause of hearing loss is the damage to the sensory hair cells, which are located inside the cochlea, a spiral-shaped bone in the inner ear. Imaging of intracochear hair cells i ...

Imaging the inner ear microanatomy is of great importance for the assessment of the state of the cells responsible for sound detection. Hearing disorders are mainly due to a malfunction of the cochlea, the bone containing the cells inside the inner ear. Un ...

Hearing Loss (HL) is the most prevalent sensorineural disorder, affecting 360 million people worldwide. As genetic causes lead to 50% of pre-lingual deafness, gene therapy is considered as a potential therapeutic strategy. Mutations in the TMC1 gene are li ...

We report an innovative technique for the visualization of cells through an overlying scattering medium by combining femtosecond laser bone ablation and two-photon excitation fluorescence (TPEF) microscopy. We demonstrate the technique by imaging hair cell ...

Bulging is a medical characteristic of the eardrum that is crucial for the diagnosis of acute otitis media. This work proposes a novel classification method for distinguishing bulged eardrums from non-bulged ones. The method uses novel key features extract ...

The performance of automated classification algorithms for medical images needs to be very high and especially robust in order to be adopted into healthcare. Most of the time the main challenge is unregistered data, since it is usually captured: 1) from di ...

The design of a proximity sensor to be integrated into cochlea implants is described. The sensor allows the anticipation of contact between the cochlear implant and intracochlear structures, including the cochlear canal wall and basilar membrane, providing ...

Objective: To enable development of an endoscope for cellular-level optical imaging of the inner ear. Study Design: A prospective study of 50 cadaveric human temporal bones to define detailed surgical anatomy of the round window (RW) region and the range o ...

The occlusion effect refers to the altered perception of one's own voice when the ear canal is fully or partially obstructed. Conventional countermeasures include the use of large vent bores or open fittings on the one hand and fittings reaching as deep as ...

PURPOSE. To define the phenotypic manifestation, confirm the genetic basis, and delineate the pathogenic mechanisms underlying an oculoauricular syndrome (OAS). METHODS. Two individuals from a consanguineous family underwent comprehensive clinical phenotyp ...

The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates the prevalence of a disabling hearing loss to be above 5% world-wide 1. A treatment with a hearing aid - be it behind-the-ear (BTE), in-the-ear (ITE) or receiver-in-canal (RIC) - involves some degree of occlusi ...

The occlusion effect refers to the altered perception of one's own voice when the ear canal is fully or partially obstructed. While the loudness increase due to body conducted sounds requires an assessment by psychoacoustic methods, the ratio of sound pres ...

Sensorineural hearing loss is the most common type of hearing loss worldwide, yet the underlying cause is typically unknown because the inner ear cannot be biopsied today without destroying hearing, and intracochlear cells have not been imaged with resolut ...

To address the requirement for lymphatic capillaries in dendritic cell (DC) mobilization from skin to lymph nodes (LNs), we used mice bearing one inactivated allele of vascular endothelial growth factor receptor 3 (VEGFR3) where skin lymphatic capillaries ...

Systems and methods for imaging ear tissue include: directing illumination radiation to pass through an intact biological structure and be incident on ear tissue that does not include an exogenous fluorophore, at a plurality of locations, the illumination ...

A new hearing therapy based on direct acoustic cochlear stimulation was developed for the treatment of severe to profound mixed hearing loss. The device efficacy was validated in an initial clinical trial with four patients. This semi-implantable investiga ...

Aim: Treatment of sensorineural hearing loss could be advanced using novel drug carriers such as hyperbranched polylysine (HBPL) or lipid nanocapsules (LNCs). This study examined HBPL and LNCs for their cellular uptake and possible toxicity in vitro and in ...

Several dysmorphic syndromes affect the development of both the eye and the ear, but only a few are restricted to the eye and the external ear. We describe a developmental defect affecting the eye and the external ear in three members of a consanguineous f ...
