The pursuit of software security and reliability hinges on the identification and elimination of software vulnerabilities, a challenge compounded by the vast and evolving complexity of modern systems. Fuzzing has emerged as an indispensable technique for b ...

Coverage-guided greybox fuzzers rely on control-flow coverage feedback to explore a target program and uncover bugs. Compared to control-flow coverage, data-flow coverage offers a more fine-grained approximation of program behavior. Data-flow coverage capt ...

Fuzzing has emerged as the most broadly used testing technique to discover bugs. Effective fuzzers rely on coverage to prioritize inputs that exercise new program areas. Edge-based code coverage of the Program Under Test (PUT) is the most commonly used cov ...

Given the increasing ubiquity of online embedded devices, analyzing their firmware is important to security, privacy, and safety. The tight coupling between hardware and firmware and the diversity found in embedded systems makes it hard to perform dynamic ...

Scala has been developed as a language that deeply integrates with the Java ecosystem. It offers seamless interoperability with existing Java libraries. Since the Scala compiler targets Java bytecode, Scala programs have access to high-performance runtimes ...

Analyzing the security of closed source binaries is currently impractical for end-users, or even developers who rely on third-party libraries. Such analysis relies on automatic vulnerability discovery techniques, most notably fuzzing with sanitizers enable ...

Dynamic program slicing can significantly reduce the amount of code developers need to inspect by focusing only on program statements relevant to their investigation. However, this technique is still not ready for production-level use either in terms of ru ...

Programming languages are increasingly compiled to multiple runtimes, each featuring their own rich structures such as their object model. Furthermore, they need to interact with other languages targeting said runtimes. A language targeting only one runtim ...

The most successful systems for "big data'' processing have all adopted functional APIs. We present a new programming model we call function passing designed to provide a more principled substrate, or middleware, upon which to build data-centric distribute ...

Coverage-based fuzz testing and dynamic symbolic execution are both popular program testing techniques. However, on their own, both techniques suffer from scalability problems when considering the complexity of modern software. Hybrid testing methods attem ...

Metaprogramming is a technique that consists in writing programs that treat other programs as data. This paradigm of software development contributes to a multitude of approaches that improve programmer productivity, including code generation, program anal ...

Production compilers for programming languages face multiple requirements. They should be correct, as we rely on them to produce code. They should be fast, in order to provide a good developer experience. They should also be easy to maintain and evolve. Th ...

Static estimation of resource utilisation of programs is a challenging and important problem with numerous applications. In this thesis, I present new algorithms that enable users to specify and verify their desired bounds on resource usage of functional p ...

There is a trend towards increased specialization of data management software for performance reasons. The improved performance not only leads to a more efficient usage of the underlying hardware and cuts the operation costs of the system, but also is a ga ...

Statically typed languages verify programs at compile-time. As a result many programming mistakes are detected at an early stage of development. A programmer does not have to specify types for every single term manually, however. Many programming languages ...

The most successful systems for “big data” processing have all adopted functional APIs. We present a new programming model we call function passing designed to provide a more principled substrate on which to build data-centric distributed systems. A key id ...

We present a lightweight library for testing concurrent Scala programs by systematically exploring multiple interleavings between user-specified operations on shared objects. Our library is targeted at beginners of concurrent programming in Scala, runs on ...

Software development has taken a fundamental turn. Software today has gone from simple, closed programs running on a single machine, to massively open programs, patching together user experiences byway of responses received via hundreds of network requests ...

Coverage criteria aim at satisfying test requirements and compute metrics values that quantify the adequacy of test suites at revealing defects in programs. Typically, a test requirement is a structural program element, and the coverage metric value repres ...

Datastores today rely on distribution and replication to achieve improved performance and fault-tolerance. But correctness of many applications depends on strong consistency properties—something that can impose substantial overheads, since it requires coor ...
