Approximately 60% to 70% of Africa's urban population lives in informal settlements, often facing inadequate housing conditions. This informal settlement population will triple by 2050 if no significant interventions are implemented. Innovative eco-friendly solutions are emerging globally to address the need for adequate housing. Currently, the implementation and continuity of these solutions rely on the adaptation of local communities. However, these are often ineffective as the local communities are reluctant to adapt to solutions since they do not resonate with their need and values. Examining the values that drive housing construction in Africa is crucial to exploring this issue, specifically the gap between local priorities and global perceptions. Reviewing various affordable housing schemes in Africa made it clear that while global perspectives emphasise rapid construction, spatial efficiency, and environmental impact, local communities prioritise affordability, accessibility, and traditional building practices. Therefore, construction initiatives promoting low-carbon strategies can only be successful if they align with the values of African communities, paving the way for sustainable development tailored to the diverse contexts of the continent.
