Appropriate waste and resource management are essential for a sustainable circular economy with reduced environmental impact. With critical resources, e-waste may serve as indirect raw material. For example, with NdFeB permanent magnets, Neodymium (Nd) and ...

The chemistry of divalent lanthanides has generated increasing interest in the past years due to their redox properties and unique reaction pathways. Notably, molecular complexes of low-valent lanthanides have been shown to be suitable one-electron reducta ...

Organic upconversion devices (OUCs) consist of an organic infrared photodetector and an organic visible light-emitting diode (OLED), connected in series. OUCs convert photons from the infrared to the visible and are of use in applications such as process c ...

Light matter interactions such as extinction, reflection, and transmission can be described by classical optics. Dur-ing the past decades, research focused on a novel resonant extinction type called plasmonics that allows for en-hancement of both types of ...

The work presented in this thesis is focused on the design and discovery of new luminescent, porous, crystalline materials for targeted applications. In particular, we focus on luminescent Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs) and Organic Molecules of Intrinsic ...

Strongly confined, fully inorganic cesium lead halide perovskite nanocrystals are of great promise for light-emitting devices in the blue spectral range owing to their high photoluminescence quantum yields. A combination of broadband fluorescence up-conver ...

Metal organic frameworks (MOFs) are increasingly used in applications that rely on the optical and electronic properties of these materials. These applications require a fundamental understanding on how the structure of these materials, and in particular t ...

Europium, terbium, dysprosium, and samarium are the main trivalent lanthanide ions emitting in the visible spectrum. In this work, the potential of these ions for colorimetric applications and colour reproduction was studied. The conversion of spectral dat ...

Here we have explored the ability of Schiff bases to act as electron reservoirs and to enable the multi-electron reduction of small molecules by lanthanide complexes. We report the reductive chemistry of the Ln(iii) complexes of the tripodal heptadentate S ...

Out of the 14 lanthanide (Ln) ions, molecular complexes of Ln(IV) were known only for cerium and more recently terbium. Here we demonstrate that the +IV oxidation state is also accessible for the large praseodymium (Pr) cation. The oxidation of the tetraki ...

Disordered packings of colloidal spheres show angle-independent structural color when the particles are on the scale of the wavelength of visible light. Previous work has shown that the positions of the peaks in the reflectance spectra can be predicted acc ...

The development of near-infrared (NIR) photodetection technologies is driven by emerging applications such as medical imaging or optical sensors for electronic displays and machine vision. An all-organic upconverter (OUD) is a device that converts incident ...

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are a class of porous materials prepared by the self-assembly of metal ions or clusters with organic ligands. The unique characteristics of MOFs, including structural tunability, high surface areas, low densities and tailore ...

Mechanoluminescence (ML) is the emission of light consecutive to a mechanical force or stress imposed to a crystalline material. Many inorganic and organic compounds present this phenomenon that is known for over 400 years. Lanthanide and uranyl salts were ...

The dynamics of hemes b and c(n) within the cytochrome b(6)f complex are investigated by means of ultrafast broad-band transient absorption spectroscopy. On the one hand, the data reveal that, subsequent to visible light excitation, part of the b hemes und ...

A unique, dual-function, photoactivatable anticancer prodrug, RuEuL, has been tailored that features a ruthenium(II) complex linked to a cyclen-europium chelate via a pi-conjugated bridge. Under irradiation at 488 nm, the dark-inactive prodrug undergoes ph ...

We measure UV and IR spectra in the gas phase for EuOH+, EuCl+, and TbO+ ions, which are produced by an electrospray ionization source and cooled to similar to 10 K in a cold, 22-pole ion trap. The UV photodissociation (UVPD) spectra of these ions show a n ...

Optical imaging emerges as a vital component of the various techniques needed to meet the stringent requirements of modern bioanalysis and bioimaging. Lanthanide luminescent bioprobes (LLBs) have greatly contributed to this field during the past 35 years b ...

Complexes of lanthanide (III) ions have been used in structural studies of biomolecules and as contrast agents (CA). Clinically approved CAs have only one water molecule in their first coordination sphere. Structure and water exchange rate of these complex ...

An ullazine unit was employed as a donor moiety in a donor-pi-acceptor (D-p-A) motif, employing the porphyrin macrocycle as a pi-system. Synthesis of this ullazine-porphyrin dyad containing sensitizer (SM63) was achieved and an investigation of the electro ...
