Fluidic actuation enables movement in a wide range of mechanical systems, from simple laboratory devices to more complex industrial machinery. Fluids are used to generate motion of mechanical pieces. The term "fluids" encompasses two types of technologies: ...

Laboratory three-point bending experiments are carried out to evaluate the effect of various fluids on the tensile strength of granite. The granite specimens were tested under both dry and saturated conditions. The fluids used to saturate the granite inclu ...

In this thesis several advances are made to the emerging field of 3D printed mechanical sensors. Techniques and processes were developed to enable the integration of highly conductive, and capacitive and piezoresistive sensing features embedded within 3D p ...

The viscoelastic behavior of dilute suspensions of reduced graphene oxide (RGO) nanoparticles in a liquid SU8 epoxy dissolved in gamma butyrolactone was investigated at RGO concentrations in the range from 0.16 to 1.07 vol. %. Our results revealed that the ...

The site-specific surface modification of colloidal substrates, yielding "patchy" nanoparticles, is a rapidly expanding area of research as a result of the new complex structural hierarchies that are becoming accessible to chemists and materials scientists ...

Locomotion is an essential feature for survival of many organisms, and it is also a technical requirement for untethered biomedical microdevices to operate inside the human body for targeted drug delivery and minimally invasive surgery. The overall goal of ...

The invention relates to titanium oxide aerogels, in particular to titanium oxide binary or ternary (e.g. titanium oxide-carbon) aerogel monoliths possessing ordered meso- and macroporosity. The porous scaffold can be made with or without addition of binde ...

Nanocellulose, which is a disintegration product of plant cellulose, has recently come to public attention because of its great mechanical properties combined with renewability and biodegradability. From an environmental point-of-view, nanocellulose has sh ...

The application of hydrogels as load-bearing biomedical components is often limited by their mechanical properties. Often an attempt to improve a hydrogel's stiffness is accompanied by a loss of toughness and swelling properties. In this work, we show that ...

Biological microorganisms swim with flagella and cilia that execute nonreciprocal motions for low Reynolds number (Re) propulsion in viscous fluids. This symmetry requirement is a consequence of Purcell's scallop theorem, which complicates the actuation sc ...

The objective of this thesis was to increase our understanding of two-phase geophysical flows (e.g. debris flows) by providing velocity profiles in idealized laboratory avalanches. To that end, we developed a new experimental platform made up of an incline ...

Rheological characteristics of linear copolymers of acrylamide (AM) and acryloyloxyethyltrimethyl ammonium chloride (Q9), differing in molar mass and chemical composition, have been studied in distilled water (DW) and industrial water (IW) obtained from a ...

The aim of this thesis was to investigate the process-structure-property relationships of UV-curable hyperbranched polymer (HBP)/silica nanocomposites. Special attention was paid to the interplay between photo-conversion, rheological behavior, shrinkage, a ...

The overall aim of this thesis has been to assess the potential of latex-based technologies for the preparation of polymer/clay nanocomposites. The key feature of latex-based technologies is that they offer the possibility of improved control of the final ...

We report experimental results related to the dam-break problem for viscoplastic fluids. Using image processing techniques, we were able to accurately reconstruct the free-surface evolution of fixed volumes of fluid suddenly released a plane. We used Carbo ...

A process-based model relevant to landfill and anaerobic digesters was developed, which included a novel approach to biomass transfer between a cellulose-bound biofilm and biomass in the bulk liquid. Model results highlighted the significance of the bacter ...

The aim of this thesis is to assess the feasibility of integrating nanoparticles into glass fiber (GF) reinforced isotactic polypropylene (iPP) composites via existing thermoplastic processing routes, and to investigate whether this results in significant ...

The aim of this thesis has been to assess the potential of branched polymers as novel exfoliants for layered silicates and their application in polyurethanes. Three different types of –OH functional branched polymers have been studied: dendrimers, hyperbra ...

Experiments on vortex shedding from a cylinder placed in uniform flows of low concentration polymer solutions are reported for Reynolds numbers from 50 to 150. The fluids used were aqueous solutions of polyethylene oxide (PEO) and rheological characterizat ...

This paper reports an experimental and numerical study conducted to investigate the behavior of macroscopic monomodal concentrated suspensions (40%) undergoing a creeping torsional flow between two rotating plates. An experimental technique based on the de ...
