A new statistical wake meandering (SWM) model is proposed that improves on existing models in the literature. Compared to the existing SWM models, the proposed model has a closed description that does not require simulations to create look-up tables while ...

Prediction of ground motion triggered by earthquakes is a prime concern for both the seismology community and geotechnical earthquake engineering one. The subfield occupied with such a problem is termed site response analysis (SRA), its one-dimensional fla ...

The CA1 region of the hippocampus is one of the most studied regions of the rodent brain, thought to play an important role in cognitive functions such as memory and spatial navigation. Despite a wealth of experimental data on its structure and function, i ...

Model and Data: Dujardin, J.; Lehning, M. Wind-Topo_model. EnviDat 2022 ...

The response of the soil-structure interface can significantly affect the performance of any geotechnical structure. Thermal cycles are a new factor that influence the response to all structures that have an energy function in addition to the structural on ...

To study the resilience of distributed learning, the “Byzantine" literature considers a strong threat model where workers can report arbitrary gradients to the parameter server. Whereas this model helped obtain several fundamental results, it has sometimes ...

This thesis is motivated by recent experiments on systems described by extensions of the one-dimensional transverse-field Ising (TFI) model where (1) finite-size properties of Ising-ordered phases -- specifically, ground state level crossings -- were obser ...

With a growing energy demand in a carbon-constrained society, fuels cells powered by renewable fuels, and specifically solid waste, are seen as interesting contributors to the energy portfolio. The alternative energy industry needs to reduce costs, enhance ...

Energy geostructures (EGs) employ heat exchangers embedded in concrete geostructures, such as piles, walls, tunnels, and sewers. In this study, energy walls (EWs) are studied with an emphasis on the following objectives: (1) to understand the fundamentals ...

Neuroscience incorporates knowledge from a range of scales, from single molecules to brain wide neural networks. Modeling is a valuable tool in understanding processes at a single scale or the interactions between two adjacent scales and researchers use a ...

A major shift in energy systems has started due to drastic changes in climate and air quality, depleting resources, as well as rising social awareness to all these changes. As a result international protocols, such as the Paris agreement, are signed settin ...

This paper introduces a novel soil water retention curve model that considers two different mechanisms of water retention –namely capillarity and adsorption – and their evolution with soil fabric along a generalized stress path. The model is formulated bas ...

We present the development of a multiphase adjoint for the Community Multiscale Air Quality (CMAQ) model, a widely used chemical transport model. The adjoint model provides location- and time-specific gradients that can be used in various applications such ...

Geometrically complex timber plate structures using wood-wood connections are increasingly designed thanks to digital fabrication. Whereas their fabrication has been automated using computer-aided design programming, research focused on the development of ...

Over the last twenty years, the importance of environmentally friendly technologies in the field of construction has grown considerably. In this regard, energy piles are an innovative technology that combines the structural role of piles with that of a gro ...

The large potential for waste resource and heat recovery in industry has been motivating research toward increasing efficiency. Process integration methods have proven to be effective tools in improving industrial sites while decreasing their resource and ...

Thermal boundary conductance (TBC) of the Ag/diamond and Au/diamond interfaces with a nanometer-thick interface layer of either nickel or molybdenum is measured by time domain thermoreflectance and modeled based on a 3-layer two-temperature model (3l-TTM). ...

Solid-oxide electrolyzer (SOE) based power-to-methane (PtM) system can efficiently store surplus renewable power into synthesis natural gas by electrolysis and methanation. The system performance depends on the operating point of the electrolyzer and syste ...

The objective of the current work is to support the design of a pilot hydrogen and electricity producing plant that uses natural gas (or biomethane) as raw material, as a transition option towards a 100% renewable transportation system. The plant, with a s ...

This article presents a new model for the main hydration peaks of tricalcium silicate and alite on the assumption that C-S-H nucleates and grows as needles. The model relies only on directly observable quantities and reproduces the transition from the acce ...
