Fine sediment represents an important part of the solid flux of rivers. Due to the size of these particles, they are often transported as suspended load. They gradually fill the pores of the substrate forming the hyporheic zone or cover the substrate by se ...

Bridge failure, due to local scour at bridge pier foundations, has become a critical issue in river and bridge engineering, which might lead to transportation disruption, loss of lives and economic problems. A practical solution to prevent bridge collapses ...

Sedimentation is known as the process of filling up natural lakes and manmade reservoirs by sediment transforming finally into floodplaimns. Its main reason is the sediment yield transported by rivers as suspended or bed load into the reservoirs. Reservoir ...

The cumulative effects of periodic redox cycling on the mobility of As, Fe, and S from alluvial sediment to groundwater were investigated in bioreactor experiments. Two particular sediments from the alluvial floodplain of the Mekong Delta River were invest ...

We investigate to what extent the initial conditions (in terms of buoyancy and geometry) of saline gravity currents flowing over a horizontal bottom influence their runout and entrainment capacity. In particular, to what extent the effect of the introducti ...

Gravity currents are density-driven flows that are able to transport high amounts of sediment and are responsible of great geomorphic changes. Moreover they can have severe repercussions on the environment since they are conveyors of substances, e.g. pollu ...

Sediment traps are crucial elements for flood protection in mountain rivers with high sediment transport capacity. Existing structures often interrupt the channel connectivity. Ideally, a sediment trap should be permeable for bed load during non-hazardous ...

Sediment transport in suspension can represent more than 90% of a river's total annual flux of sediment. In the case of the Yangtze River, more than 99% of the sediment supplied to the sea is suspended load. Suspended sediment is thus an important componen ...

Few studies have addressed simultaneously the feedback between the hydrodynamics of a gravity cur- rent and the geomorphological changes of a mobile bed. Hydrodynamic quantities such as turbulent and mean velocities, bed shear stress and turbulent stresses ...

Describing bedload transport as a stochastic process is an idea that emerged in the 1930s with the pioneering work of Einstein. For a long time, the stochastic approach attracted marginal attention, but the situation has radically changed over the last dec ...

Field observations in a wide range of environments have shown that sediment availability is a major control on the suspended sediment observations in streams. Here we examine, via laboratory experiments, how the amount of proximal in-channel fine sediment ...

Acoustic Doppler velocity profilers (ADVP) measure the velocity simultaneously in a linear array of bins. They have been successfully used in the past to measure three-dimensional turbulent flow and the dynamics of suspended sediment. The capability of ADV ...

Bed-load transport rate in gravel-bed rivers shows large non-Gaussian fluctuations, even under steady flow conditions. The development of high-resolution measurement techniques during the last two decades creates research opportunities to study the intermi ...

Gravity currents are flows driven by buoyancy differences between two contacting fluids caused by differences in temperature, salinity, or by the presence of suspended particles. Such flows can reach high velocities near the bed, especially on the area beh ...

Numerical modeling of bed-load transport in shallow flows, particularly oriented toward environmental flows, is an active field of research. Nevertheless, other possible applications exist. In particular, bed-load transport phenomena are relevant in urban ...

Sediment traps are used for the protection of urban settlements at rivers in mountainous regions. These structures aim at the retention of sediment in the case of hazardous floods, but existing sediment traps tend to retain sediment also when the discharge ...

Mountain confluences are characterized by narrow and steep tributaries that provide important sediment load to the confluence, whereas themain channel supplies the dominant flow discharge. This results in a marked bed discordance between the tributary and ...

Within the fluvial network, river confluences are particular areas characterized by complex hydrodynamic, morphodynamic and sedimentary processes. These processes have been observed to be governed by parameters such as the discharge ratio, the junction ang ...

This paper examines the importance of particle diffusion relative to advection in bed load transport. Particle diffusion is not included in existing approaches to bedload transport. Based on recent advances in the probabilistic theory of sediment transport ...

The dependence of curvature-induced secondary flow on the curvature ratio H/R (H is the average flow depth and R is the centreline radius of curvature), the Froude number Fr, and the dimensionless roughness coefficient Cf was systematically investigated in ...
