Cartilage homeostasis, crucial for musculoskeletal function, is orchestrated by interconnected biophysical cues. In healthy cartilage, repetitive compressive loading not only elicits a range of mechanical stimuli but also induces a gradual transient temper ...

Hydrogels are among the first materials expressly designed for their use in biomedicine. However, state-of-the-art applications of hydrogels are severely limited because they are typically either too soft or too brittle such that they cannot bear significa ...

Coating nano particles and other substrates for efficiency enhancement, protection and obtaining new atomic structures is a widespread research topic in catalysis and material synthesis. Thus far, different approaches of coating, ranging from simplest to s ...

Bone marrow adipocytes (BMAds) constitute the most abundant stromal component of adult human bone marrow. Two subtypes of BMAds have been described, the more labile regulated adipocytes (rBMAds) and the more stable constitutive adipocytes (cBMAds), which d ...

The objective of this study was to determine the normative bone mineral density (BMD) of cortical and trabecular bone regions in the adult glenoid and its dependence on the subject's age and sex. We analyzed computed tomography (CT) scans of 441 shoulders ...

Granular hydrogels are composed of hydrogel-based microparticles, so-called microgels, that are densely packed to form an ink that can be 3D printed, injected or cast into macroscopic structures. They are frequently used as tissue engineering scaffolds bec ...

Objective This study explored the impact of time-restricted eating (TRE) versus standard dietary advice (SDA) on bone health. Methods Adults with >= 1 component of metabolic syndrome were randomized to TRE (ad libitum eating within 12 hours) or SDA (food p ...

Single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) have unique optoelectronic properties that make them suitable for applications ranging from phototherapy to imaging and sensing, but their uptake has mainly been explored in eukaryotic cells. Here the authors explore ...

Glenohumeral osteoarthritis is a degenerative shoulder joint disease, which causes the breakdown of articular cartilage and bone. People affected by this disease suffer from severe pain and eventually reduced mobility and poor life quality. This disease is ...

The limitations and potential complications correlated with autogenous bone grafts have raised interest in the development of synthetic bone graft substitutes. ß-tricalcium phosphate (ß-TCP) is one of the most promising materials for synthetic bone graft s ...

A mechanistic understanding of bone fracture is indispensable for developing improved fracture risk assessment in clinics. Since bone is a hierarchically structured material, gaining such knowledge requires analysis at multiple length scales. Here, the ten ...

To comprehend the most detrimental characteristics behind bone fractures, it is key to understand the material and tissue level strain limits and their relation to failure sites. The aim of this study was to investigate the three-dimensional strain distrib ...

The discovery of carbon-based nanomaterials has impacted a variety of research areas in ways that could not be imagined three decades ago. Their unique combination of structural, optical, and electronic properties has made these nano-sized materials partic ...

The proteasome inhibitor bortezomib (BZM) is one of the most potent anti-cancer drugs in the therapy of multiple myeloma. In this study, an adhesive drug delivery system (DDS) for BZM was developed. Therefore, we extended the present DDS concept of polyele ...

The treatment of bone defects with recombinant bone morphogenetic protein-2 (BMP-2) requires high doses precluding broad clinical application. Here, a bioengineering approach is presented that strongly improves low-dose BMP-2-based bone regeneration by mob ...

The anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) constitutes one of the most important stabilizing tissues of the knee joint whose rapture is very prevalent. ACL reconstruction (ACLR) from a graft is a surgery which yields the best outcome. Taking into account the com ...

The bone marrow (BM) microenvironment, or niche, significantly affects behaviors of its resident stem cell populations. Disruptions in the BM niche contribute to a number of severe clinical pathologies. Discovery of novel therapeutic strategies for BM-rela ...

Objective: To test whether subchondral bone mineral density (sBMD) and cartilage thickness (CTh) of femoral condyles are correlated in knees without and with severe medial femorotibial osteoarthritis (OA), using a subregional analysis with computerized tom ...

Patella-related complications after total knee arthroplasty (TKA) remain a major clinical concern. Previous studies have suggested that increased postoperative patellar bone strain could be related to such complications, but there is limited knowledge on p ...

Biological mineralized tissues are hybrid materials with complex hierarchical architecture composed of biominerals often embedded in an organic matrix. The atomic-scale comprehension of surfaces and organo-mineral interfaces of these biominerals is of para ...
