The electrification of the transport sector is a key element in decarbonizing our societies. However, energy systems will have to cope with additional electricity demand due to the charging needs of electric vehicles (EVs) together with the integration of ...

With the growing popularity of electric vehicles (EVs), maintaining power grid stability has become a significant challenge. To address this issue, EV charging control strategies have been developed to manage the switch between vehicle-to-grid (V2G) and gr ...

In this work, we studied the potential of using thin films deposited by plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) for two main purposes: introducing an n-type passivating contact at the front of a TOPCon solar cell, or simplifying the fabrication o ...

Recombination at metal/semiconductor interfaces represents the main limitation in mainstream c-Si solar cells, primarily based on the passivated emitter and rear cell (PERC) concept. Full-area passivating contacts based on SiOx/poly-Si stacks are a candida ...

Electric vehicles (EVs) currently dominate the sales in the automotive market. A big leap in this market can be made by developing a photovoltaic product that can be integrated to an EV, as it can boost the driving range of the EV while reducing the chargi ...

Sensing and imaging of light in the shortwave infrared (SWIR) range is increasingly used in various fields, including bio-imaging, remote sensing, and semiconductor process control. SWIR-sensitive organic photodetectors (OPDs) are promising because organic ...

One-dimensional materials have gained much attention in the last decades: from carbon nanotubes to ultrathin nanowires to few-atom atomic chains, these can all display unique electronic properties and great potential for next-generation applications. Exfol ...

The development of cost-effective and earth-abundant semiconducting materials is imperative for the sustainable deployment of photovoltaic technology. Zinc phosphide (Zn3P2) is a promising candidate for terawatt-scale electricity generation. It has a near- ...

Photovoltaic (PV) technology is one of the most promising renewable energy sources. The PV market is dominated by crystalline silicon (c-Si) based technologies, thus ensuring their long-term performance is of paramount importance for manufacturers, investo ...

Solar cells rely on the efficient generation of electrons and holes and the subsequent collection of these photoexcited charge carriers at spatially separated electrodes. High wafer quality is now commonplace for crystalline silicon (c-Si) based solar cell ...

High-temperature compatible passivating contacts based on phosphorus doped polysilicon (poly-Si(n)) on a thin silicon oxide, employed on the rear side of bifacial n-PERT like solar cells provide an efficiency increase while being compatible with current ph ...

Thanks to the continuous improvement of crystalline silicon (c-Si) solar cells, largely dominating the market, photovoltaic electricity is nowadays the cheapest source of energy on the market. Yet, solar energy is far from being completely harvested, as t ...

The EU crystalline silicon (c-Si) PV manufacturing industry has faced strong foreign competition in the last decade. To strive in this competitive environment and differentiate itself from the competition, the EU c-Si PV manufacturing industry needs to (1) ...

Silicon (Si), with its indirect bandgap, is a non-ideal absorber. Thus, various strategies to boost silicon solar cells' efficiency, including advanced texturing, multilayer anti-reflecting coating, and rear reflectors are utilized. Dielectrics, deposited ...

Solar energy is the most abundant energy source, harnessing solar energy holds the solution to the challenge of increasing global energy demand and reducing our dependence on fossil fuels. Photovoltaics which directly convert solar energy into electricity ...

The high-efficiency silicon heterojunction (SHJ) technology is now perceived mature enough to enter the Giga-Watt manufacturing scale with several players around the globe. The growth of the SHJ technology requires confidence from manufacturers, investors, ...

Ultrathin, solution-processed emerging solar cells with high power-per-weight (PPW) outputs demonstrate unique potential for applications where low weight, high power output, and flexibility are indispensable. The following perspective explores the literat ...

Nonradiative recombination in Cu(In,Ga)Se2 (CIGS) solar cells has long been attributed to the antisite defects MCu (M = In, Ga), but the underlying mechanism is still elusive. Using rigorous first-principles calculations, we demonstrate that the antisites ...

This thesis reports on the study and use of low temperature processes for the deposition of indium gallium nitride (InGaN) thin films in order to alleviate some of the present drawbacks of its monolitic deposition on silicon for photovoltaic applications. ...

The recombination of photogenerated charge carriers at metal-semiconductor interfaces remains a major source of efficiency loss in photovoltaic cells. Here, we present SiNx and AlOx nanolayers as promising interface dielectrics to enable high efficiency ho ...
