Time-sensitive networks provide worst-case guarantees for applications in domains such as the automobile, automation, avionics, and the space industries. A violation of these guarantees can cause considerable financial loss and serious damage to human live ...

Network neutrality is important for users, content providers, policymakers, and regulators interested in understanding how network providers differentiate performance. When determining whether a network differentiates against certain traffic, it is importa ...

Online services have become ubiquitous in technological society, the global demand for which has driven enterprises to construct gigantic datacenters that run their software. Such facilities have also recently become a substrate for third-party organizatio ...

Dampers are devices that reduce delay jitter in the context of time-sensitive networks, by delaying packets for the amount written in packet headers. Jitter reduction is required by some real-time applications; beyond this, dampers have the potential to so ...

As IoT applications gain widespread adoption, it becomes important to design and implement IoT protocols with security. Existing research in protocol security reveals that the majority of disclosed protocol vulnerabilities are caused by incorrectly impleme ...

Plasma treatments are currently being assessed as a seed processing technology for agricultural purposes. There is sufficient information as a proof-of-concept, but a lack of standardization in the methodology prevents a convincing evaluation of plasma tre ...

Datacenters are the heart of our digital lives. Online applications, such as social-networking and e-commerce, run inside datacenters under strict Service Level Objectives for their tail latency. Tight latency SLOs are necessary for such services to remain ...

This article proposes a discussion on the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats related to the deployment of QUIC end-to-end from a satellite-operator point-of-view. The deployment of QUIC is an opportunity for improving the quality of experienc ...

Flow reshaping is used in time-sensitive networks (as in the context of IEEE TSN and IETF Detnet) in order to reduce burstiness inside the network and to support the computation of guaranteed latency bounds. This is performed using per-flow regulators (suc ...

Remote Procedure Calls are widely used to connect datacenter applications with strict tail-latency service level objectives in the scale of µs. Existing solutions utilize streaming or datagram-based transport protocols for RPCs that impose overheads and li ...

For efficient acceleration on FPGA, it is essential for external memory to match the throughput of the processing pipelines. However, the usable DRAM bandwidth decreases significantly if the access pattern causes frequent row conflicts. Memory controllers ...

In this paper we study a multi-channel network, each station of which is equipped with a network interface that has a receiver buffer of multiple packets. In this way, each station is able to receive multiple packets per time instant. We adopt a synchronou ...

Adapting the transmission rate of video telephony Internet applications in order to guarantee the maximal communication quality is still an open and extremely challenging problem. The congestion control algorithm, which is the algorithm responsible for adj ...

In the last decades the Internet traffic has greatly evolved. The advent of new Internet services and applications has, in fact, led to a significant growth of the amount of data transmitted, as well as to a transformation of the data type. As a matter of ...

In today’s modern datacenters, the waiting time spent within a server’s queue is a major contributor of the end-to-end tail latency of μs-scale remote procedure calls. In traditional TCP, congestion control handles in-network congestion, while flow control ...

The conventional wisdom is that aggressive networking requirements, such as high packet rates for small messages and microsecond-scale tail latency, are best addressed outside the kernel, in a user-level networking stack. In particular, dataplanes borrow d ...

Due to the presence of buffers in the inner network nodes, each congestion event leads to buffer queueing and thus to an increasing end-to-end delay. In the case of delay sensitive applications, a large delay might not be acceptable and a solution to prope ...

Congestion control may be provided. A set of rules may allow a congestion control process to switch from delay-mode to loss-mode (e.g., in the presence of loss-based flows) and back to delay-mode (e.g., when loss-based flows stop). Fairness properties of t ...

An active distribution network (ADN) is an electrical-power distribution network that implements a real-time monitoring and control of the electrical resources and the grid. Effective monitoring and control is realised by deploying a large number of sensin ...

Power-line communications (PLC) are becoming a key component in home networking, because they provide easy and high-throughput connectivity. The dominant MAC protocol for high data-rate PLC, the IEEE 1901, employs a CSMA/CA mechanism similar to the backoff ...
