Key operational and protection functions of power systems (e.g., optimal power flow scheduling and control, state estimation, protection, and fault location) rely on the availability of models to represent the system's behavior under different operating co ...

Fluid injections can induce aseismic slip, resulting in stress changes that may propagate faster than pore pressure diffusion, potentially triggering seismicity at substantial distances from injection wells. Constraining the maximum extent of these aseismi ...

Sustainability should be integrated into everything we do, including engineering and student projects. This experiential activity uses the selection of materials for a wind turbine to engage participants in a contextualised negotiation of multiple facets o ...

Indonesia is located in a high-seismic-risk region with a significant number of non-engineered houses, which typically have a higher risk during earthquakes. Due to the wide variety of differences even among parameters within one building typology, it is d ...

Multi-view approaches to people-tracking have the potential to better handle occlusions than single-view ones in crowded scenes. They often rely on the tracking-by-detection paradigm, which involves detecting people first and then connecting the detections ...

The majority of uncertainty quantification methods for deep object detectors are based on the network output, such as sampling strategies like Monte-Carlo dropout or deep ensembles with straight-forward transfers to object detection. Here, we study gradien ...

This paper explores, by means of continuum finite element (CFE) analysis, a recently developed concept that promotes controlled inelastic energy dissipation within the embedded portion of column base connections rather than in steel columns of conventional ...

New extensions and features to the remote laboratories currently used for undergraduate courses in automatic control laboratory at the School of Engineering of University of Applied Sciences and Arts Western Switzerland are presented. This paper shows how ...

Vulnerable road users (VRUs) constitute an increasing proportion of the annual road fatalities across Europe. One of the crash types involved in these fatalities are blind spot crashes between trucks and bicyclists. Despite the presence of mandatory blind ...

We describe a method to measure the relaxation rates in Rubidium (Rb) Pulsed Optically Pumped (POP) vapor cell frequency standards. By means of repeated spectroscopy measurements with varying Ramsey time, we show how to extract multiple estimations of the ...

Ion-selective electrodes (ISEs) represent one of the main technologies for developing sensors to measure ions concentration in human tissues. All-solid-state ISEs are of key importance for sensor miniaturization, especially toward point-of-care application ...

Multi-energy microgrid (MEMG) has the potential to improve the energy utilization efficiency. However, the uncertainty caused by distributed renewable energy resources brings an urgent need for multi-energy co -optimization to ensure secure operation. This ...

Adiabatic superconducting devices are promising candidates to develop high-speed/low-power electronics. Advances in physical technology must be matched with a systematic development of comprehensive design and simulation tools to bring superconducting elec ...

Accurate forecasting of solar power generation with fine temporal and spatial resolution is vital for the operation of the power grid. However, state-of-the-art approaches that combine machinelearning with numerical weather predictions (NWP) have coarse re ...
