Functional materials that enable many technological applications in our everyday lives owe their unique properties to defects that are carefully engineered and incorporated into these materials during processing. However, optimizing and characterizing thes ...

Digital data is a gold mine for modern journalism. However, datasets which interest journalists are extremely heterogeneous, ranging from highly structured (relational databases), semi-structured (JSON, XML, HTML), graphs (e.g., RDF), and text. Journalists ...

Recent years have witnessed a rise in real-world data captured with rich structural information that can be better depicted by multi-relational or heterogeneous graphs. However, research on relational representation learning has so far mostly focused on th ...

Ever since the links between the development of new technologies and economic growth became evident, researchers have attempted to study how the creation of knowledge fosters progress. If pushing the frontier of knowledge has an impact on progress and well ...

In this paper a hybrid framework is illustrated, with a software and hardware integration strategy, for an industrial platform that exploits features from a Relational Database (RDB) and Triplestore using the blackboard architectural pattern, ensuring effi ...

AIRSpec is a platform consisting of several chemometric packages developed for analysis of Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectra of atmospheric aerosols. The packages are accessible through a browser-based interface, which also generates the necessary ...

Purpose This paper aims to discuss the nexus between two societal (sub) systems of housing and energy supply to shed new light on the key institutional barriers to socio-technical energy transition in the built environment. The key research question is to ...

The world economy is undergoing dramatic changes, largely driven by the new availability of fine-grained information. Innovative ways of using datalarge and small-have also prompted a rethinking of the boundaries for the combination and use of knowledge. T ...

With the advent of emerging technologies and the Internet of Things, the importance of online data analytics has become more pronounced. Businesses and companies are adopting approaches that provide responsive analytics to stay competitive in the global ma ...

The proposed article suggests that urban studies are in need of new tools to describe and analyze the different “regimes of urbanization” in an increasingly heterogeneous urban world. In order to create dynamic and relational descriptions of contemporary c ...

This article investigates the evolution of data quality issues from traditional structured data managed in relational databases to Big Data. In particular, the paper examines the nature of the relationship between Data Quality and several research coordina ...

In recent years, ontology for the Product Lifecycle Management domain has raised a lot of interest in research communities, both academic and industrial. It has emerged as a convenient method for supporting the concept of closed lifecycle information loop, ...

We present the design and implementation of a SQL query processor that outperforms existing database systems and is written in just about 500 lines of Scala code - a convincing case study that high-level functional programming can handily beat C for system ...

Volumes of data used in science and industry are growing rapidly. When researchers face the challenge of analyzing them, their format is often the first obstacle. Lack of standardized ways of exploring different data layouts requires an effort each time to ...

UCNEbase (http://ccg.vital-it.ch/UCNEbase) is a free, web-accessible information resource on the evolution and genomic organization of ultra-conserved non-coding elements (UCNEs). It currently covers 4351 such elements in 18 different species. The majority ...

One of the key challenges to realize automated processing of the information on the Web, which is the central goal of the Semantic Web, is related to the entity matching problem. There are a number of tools that reliably recognize named entities, such as p ...

Many data-driven social and Web applications involve collaboration and coordination. The vision of Declarative Data-Driven Coordination (D3C), proposed in Kot et al. [2010], is to support coordination in the spirit of data management: to make it data-centr ...

This doctoral thesis is based on the observation that the individualization of society that is taking place today has led to new differentiations within the domains of lifestyle and residential choice. Our main hypothesis was that lifestyle influences resi ...

Network administrators are faced with a large amount of network data that they need to sift through to analyze user behaviors and detect anomalies. Through a network monitoring tool, we obtained TCP and UDP connection records together with additional infor ...

As person names are non-unique, the same name on different Web pages might or might not refer to the same real-world person. This entity identification problem is one of the most challenging issues in realizing the Semantic Web or entity-oriented search. W ...
