We introduce an algorithm to reconstruct a mesh from discrete samples of a shape's Signed Distance Function (SDF). A simple geometric reinterpretation of the SDF lets us formulate the problem through a point cloud, from which a surface can be extracted wit ...

In this thesis, we propose model order reduction techniques for high-dimensional PDEs that preserve structures of the original problems and develop a closure modeling framework leveraging the Mori-Zwanzig formalism and recurrent neural networks. Since high ...

The COVID-19 pandemic outbreak is causing a dramatic worsening in the already complicated living conditions of blind and visually impaired individuals. Social distancing is the most effective strategy to limit virus spread, but is extremely difficult for b ...

Among our five senses, we rely mostly on audition and vision to perceive an environment. Our ears are able to detect stimuli from all directions, especially from obstructed and far-away objects. Even in smoke, harsh weather conditions, or at night â situ ...

We study the problem of localizing a configuration of points and planes from the collection of point-to-plane distances. This problem models simultaneous localization and mapping from acoustic echoes as well as the & x201C;structure from sound & x201D; app ...

We present new techniques to analyze natural local search algorithms for several variants of the max-sum diversification problem which, in its most basic form, is as follows: given an n-point set X subset of R-d and an integer k, select k points in X so th ...

We consider sets L = {l(1),..., l(n)} of n labeled lines in general position in R-3, and study the order types of point sets {p(1),..., p(n)} that stem from the intersections of the lines in L with (directed) planes Pi, not parallel to any line of L, that ...

An ordinary circle of a set P of n points in the plane is defined as a circle that contains exactly three points of P. We show that if P is not contained in a line or a circle, then P spans at least ordinary circles. Moreover, we determine the exact minimu ...

We consider the problem of testing graph cluster structure: given access to a graph G = (V, E), can we quickly determine whether the graph can be partitioned into a few clusters with good inner conductance, or is far from any such graph? This is a generali ...

Background: This study proposes a method for inferring the premorbid glenoid shape and orientation of scapulae affected by glenohumeral osteoarthritis (OA) to inform restorative surgery. ...

We study the problem of constructing epsilon-coresets for the (k, z)-clustering problem in a doubling metric M(X, d). An epsilon-coreset is a weighted subset S subset of X with weight function w : S -> R->= 0, such that for any k-subset C is an element of ...

The present thesis deals with problems arising from discrete mathematics, whose proofs make use of tools from algebraic geometry and topology. The thesis is based on four papers that I have co-authored, three of which have been published in journals, and o ...

In the present thesis, we delve into different extremal and algebraic problems arising from combinatorial geometry. Specifically, we consider the following problems. For any integer

n\ge 3

, we define

e(n)

to be the minimum positive integer such that an ...

We study simultaneous localization and mapping with a device that uses reflections to measure its distance from walls. Such a device can be realized acoustically with a synchronized collocated source and receiver; it behaves like a bat with no capacity for ...

Let S be a set of n points in R-2 contained in an algebraic curve C of degree d. We prove that the number of distinct distances determined by S is at least c(d)n(4/3), unless C contains a line or a circle. We also prove the lower bound c(d)' min{m(2/3)n(2/ ...

A fundamental problem in comparative genomics is to compute the distance between two genomes in terms of its higher level organization (given by genes or syntenic blocks). For two genomes without duplicate genes, we can easily define (and almost always eff ...

We define the bisector energy E(P) of a set P in R-2 to be the number of quadruples (a, b, c, d) is an element of P-4 such that a, b determine the same perpendicular bisector as c, d. Equivalently, E(P) is the number of isosceles trapezoids determined by P ...

Let parallel to.parallel to be a norm in R-d whose unit ball is B. Assume that V subset of B is a finite set of cardinality n, with Sigma(v is an element of V) v = 0. We show that for every integer k with 0

The most basic form of the max-sum dispersion problem (MSD) is as follows: given n points in R^q and an integer k, select a set of k points such that the sum of the pairwise distances within the set is maximal. This is a prominent diversity problem, with w ...

Let B-M : C x C -> C be a bilinear form B-M(p, q) - p(T)Mq, with an invertible matrix M is an element of C-2x2. We prove that any finite set S contained in an irreducible algebraic curve C of degree d in C determines Omega(d)(vertical bar S vertical bar(4/ ...
