The outstanding properties of Gallium Nitride (GaN) have enabled considerable improvements in the performance of power devices compared to traditional silicon technology, resulting in more efficient and highly compact power converters. GaN power technology ...

Despite their high sensitivity and their suitability for miniaturization, biosensors are still limited for clinical applications due to the lack of reproducibility and specificity of their detection performance. The design and preparation of sensing surfac ...

With the advent of intelligent sensor nodes in everyday life, low power aspects of system design become more and more important. Adaptive body biasing is a promising methodology to achieve dynamic adaptation of the tradeoff between performance and energy b ...

The current lack of adapted performance metrics leads clinicians to focus on what children with cerebral palsy (CP) do in a clinical setting, despite the ongoing debate on whether capacity (what they do at best) adequately reflects performance (what they d ...

Run-time profiling of software applications is key to energy efficiency. Even the most optimized hardware combined to an optimally designed software may become inefficient if operated poorly. Moreover, the diversification of modern computing platforms and ...

In this paper we tackle the problem of finding the source of a gaseous leak with a robot in a three-dimensional (3-D) physical space. The proposed method extends the operational range of the probabilistic Infotaxis algorithm [1] into 3-D and makes multiple ...

Our work addresses the problem of placement of threads, or virtual cores, onto physical cores in a multicore NUMA system. Different placements result in varying degrees of contention for shared resources, so choosing the right placement can have a large ef ...

The ever increasing penetration of renewable energy systems in the distribution grids will inevitably require profound changes in the grid infrastructure. One emerging direction, the medium voltage dc (MVdc) grids, is the cornerstone of this work. They are ...

Nanoplasmonic structures can tightly confine light onto a material's surface to probe biomolecular interactions not easily accessed by other sensing techniques. New and exciting developments in nanofabrication processes, nano-optical trapping, graphene dev ...

This thesis advances the field of high-voltage thin film transistors (HVTFTs) and dielectric elastomer actuators (DEAs) by demonstrating a strategy for low-voltage addressing of an array of high voltage soft actuators suspended on a flexible substrate. Fi ...

Key-Value (K-V) stores are an integral building block in modern datacenter applications. With byteaddressable persistent memory (PM) technologies, such as Intel/Micron's 3D XPoint, on the horizon, there has been an influx of new high performance K-V stores ...

The band structure of many semiconducting monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) possesses two degenerate valleys with equal and opposite Berry curvature. It has been predicted that, when illuminated with circularly polarized light, interband tr ...

A detailed analysis of the cross-like Hall cells integrated in regular bulk CMOS technological process is performed. To this purpose their main parameters have been evaluated. A three-dimensional physical model was employed in order to evaluate the structu ...

In this paper the realization and optimization of two coreless open-loop bus bar current transducers based on a Hall effect sensor are presented. Two types of bus bar are evaluated: flat rectangular and rectangular with a restrictive region in the middle. ...

Charge transport in AgI subject to an external magnetic field is studied via computer simulations. We demonstrate that a recently developed algorithm can effectively complement problematic experiments to detect the ionic Hall effect, and identify previousl ...

Photonic crystals (PhCs) are engineered nanostructures that enable an extraordinary control over the flow of light. These structures can be fabricated out of common semiconductors, are compatible with existing industrial fabrication technologies, and are e ...

An automatic real-time alignment and calibration strategy of the LHCb detector was developed for the Run II. Thanks to the online calibration, tighter event selection criteria can be used in the trigger. Furthermore, the online calibration facilitates the ...

This work investigates a new method to measure mobility in nanowires. Based on a simple analytical approach and numerical simulations, we bring evidence that the traditional technique of Hall voltage measurement in low dimensional structures such as nanowi ...

The main characteristics of Hall Effect Sensors, based on "silicon-on-insulator" (SOI) structure in the ideal design features, are evaluated by performing three-dimensional physical simulations. A particular Hall shape reproducing an XFAB SOI XI10 integrat ...

A system for wireless power transfer of micro-systems in-vivo implantable in small animals is presented. The described solution uses a servo-controlled transmitter moved under the animal moving space. The solution minimizes the power irradiation while enab ...
