We study the magneto-rotational instability (MRI) dynamo in a geometrically thin disc (H/R < 1) using stratified zero net (vertical) flux shearing box simulations. We find that mean fields and electromotive forces (EMFs) oscillate with a primary frequency ...

We analytically derive an amplitude equation for the weakly nonlinear evolution of the linearly most amplified response of a non-normal dynamical system. The development generalizes the method proposed in Ducimetière et al. (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 947, 2022, ...

How does the visual system represent continuity in the constantly changing visual input? A recent proposal is that vision is serially dependent: Stimuli seen a moment ago influence what we perceive in the present. In line with this, recent frameworks sugge ...

Notions of surprise and novelty have been used in various experimental and theoretical studies across multiple brain areas and species. However, 'surprise' and 'novelty' refer to different quantities in different studies, which raises concerns about whethe ...

Integrating various reinforcements into 3D concrete printing (3DCP) is an efficient method to satisfy critical requirements for structural applications. This paper explores an explainable ensemble machine learning (EML) method to predict the bond failure m ...

The response of the soil-structure interface can significantly affect the performance of any geotechnical structure. Thermal cycles are a new factor that influence the response to all structures that have an energy function in addition to the structural on ...

Knowledge-based approaches use the statistics collected from protein data-bank structures to estimate effective interaction potentials between amino acid pairs. Empirical relations are typically employed that are based on the crucial choice of a reference ...

We develop a reduced model for hard-magnetic, thin, linear-elastic shells that can be actuated through an external magnetic field, with geometrically exact strain measures. Assuming a reduced kinematics based on the Kirchhoff-Love assumption, we derive a r ...

Technology-based, open-ended learning environments (OELEs) can capture detailed information of students' interactions as they work through a task or solve a problem embedded in the environment. This information, in the form of log data, has the potential t ...

Polymer plasma produced by laser ablation is investigated in a theoretical manner. In relation to the fact that the charge carrier circulation is assumed to take place on fractal curves, the so-called fractality type, electrical charge transport can be res ...

We reveal an intriguing anomaly in the temperature dependence of the specific heat of a one-dimensional Bose gas. The observed peak holds for arbitrary interaction and remembers a superfluid-to-normal phase transition in higher dimensions, but phase transi ...

The creation and curation of labeled datasets can be an arduous, expensive, and time-consuming task. We introduce a workflow paradigm for remote consensus-building between expert annotators, while considerably reducing the associated administrative overhea ...

Familiarity is an elusive concept, capturing what we know intimately and what we only recognize from having seen before. This article aims to disambiguate these interpretations by proposing a sociological conceptualization of familiarity as a dynamic relat ...

In concrete structures, opened cracks contribute significantly to the transfer of shear and normal stresses through the contact forces occurring between fractured surfaces. Such contact forces are due to protruding asperities, engaged by interlocking and f ...

To exploit fusion as a source of energy, a hot and dense confined plasma is needed. This is achieved in tokamaks by actively controlling the plasma state meaning shape, position and internal kinetic profiles. This thesis addresses two topics: the developme ...

Based in Colombo, Sri Lanka, Milinda Pathiraja and Ganga Rathnayake of Robust Architecture Workshop have developed a mode of design practice with an impact that goes beyond its built projects, to contribute to social, political and economic development. ...

New methods are required for sustainable and economical management of bridges. Efficient management can be achieved by a detailed understanding of bridge behavior through monitoring and model-based data interpretation. This paper presents a methodology to ...

We derive the branch ampacity constraint associated to power losses for the convex optimal power flow (OPF) model based on the branch flow formulation. The branch ampacity constraint derivation is motivated by the physical interpretation of the transmissio ...

The entropy production is one of the most essential features for systems operating out of equilibrium. The formulation for discrete-state systems goes back to the celebrated Schnakenberg's work and hitherto can be carried out when for each transition betwe ...

Weyl semimetals such as the TaAs family (TaAs, TaP, NbAs, NbP) host quasiparticle excitations resemblingthe long-sought-after Weyl fermions at special band-crossing points in the band structure denoted as Weylnodes. They are predicted to exhibit a negative ...
