In this thesis, we exploited optical and X-ray pump-probe methods in a synergistic approach to study the interplay of the electronic, spin and structural degrees of freedom in two class of complex systems relevant for solar energy conversion applications: ...

Free-electron lasers provide a source of x-ray pulses short enough and intense enough to drive nonlinearities in molecular systems. Impulsive interactions driven by these x-ray pulses provide a way to create and probe valence electron motions with high tem ...

The excited state non-adiabatic dynamics of polyatomic molecules, leading to the coupling of structural and electronic dynamics, is a fundamentally important yet challenging problem for both experiment and theory. Ongoing developments in ultrafast extreme ...

In homogeneous catalysis, the main emphasis on improving catalyst performance (rate, yield and selectivity) is directed towards manipulation of the ligands. The steric and electronic effects of ligands are extremely well understood and the rational design ...

The structure and defect concentration of colloidal solutions of ZnO nanoparticles, synthesized by a sol gel procedure (SG-NP), as well as commercially available ZnO nanoparticles (SA-NP) are investigated by UV-vis absorption spectroscopy, transmission ele ...

The mechanism of binding of the surfactant-cobalt(III) complex, cis-[Co(phen) 2(C 14H 29NH 2)Cl](ClO 4) 2{dot operator}3H 2O (phen = 1,10-phenanthroline, C 14H 29NH 2 = tetradecylamine) with bovine serum albumin (BSA) was investigated by UV-vis absorption, ...

Over the last decade, ultrafast time-resolved X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) has evolved to be now a mature and well-established experimental technique, giving extremely detailed information about the local geometrical and electronic structure in the ...

The photocycle of rhenium carbonyl complexes, type facial-[Re(L)(CO)3(diimine)]n [L=halide / n=0, L=4-Ethyl-pyridine (Etpy)- Imidazole (ImH) /n=+1, diimine= bpy , 10- phenanthroline (phen), 4,4'-dimethyl-2,2'-bpy (dmb)] was studied using a set of ultrafast ...

Solvation dynamics, the process of solvent reorganization upon electronic excitation of a solute, is central to our understanding chemical reactions in liquid phase. Ultrafast optical studies of solvation dynamics have so far been carried out on polyatomic ...

In this thesis we followed the synergetic approach of combining ultrafast optical and X-ray spectroscopies to unravel the electronic and geometric structural dynamics of the solvated binuclear transition metal complex [Pt2(P2O5H2)4] 4- (PtPOP). This molecu ...

Plasmas, both in the laboratory and in space, are often not in thermodynamic equilibrium, and the plasma electron distribution function is accordingly non-Maxwellian. Suprathermal electron tails can be generated by external drives, such as rf waves and ele ...

L2,3 x-ray absorption spectra of aq. [RuII(bpy)3]2+ were recorded in its ground and excited states, 50 ps after short pulse laser excitation. Significant changes in both the XANES (x-ray Near-Edge Absorption Structure) and the EXAFS (Extended x-ray Absorpt ...
