Consider the wave equation with heterogeneous coefficients in the homogenization regime. At large times, the wave interacts in a nontrivial way with the heterogeneities, giving rise to effective dispersive effects. The main achievement of the present wor ...

It is well-known that for any integral domain R, the Serre conjecture ring R(X), i.e., the localization of the univariate polynomial ring R[X] at monic polynomials, is a Bezout domain of Krull dimension

Is it possible to detect if the sample paths of a stochastic process almost surely admit a finite expansion with respect to some/any basis? The determination is to be made on the basis of a finite collection of discretely/noisily observed sample paths. We ...

With the application requirements of wireless technology in implantable bioelectronics, knowledge of the fundamental limits for implanted antennas becomes critical. In this work, we investigated the variation of maximum power density within simplified body ...

The optimization of surface finish to improve performance, such as adhesion, friction, wear, fatigue life, or interfacial transport, occurs largely through trial and error, despite significant advancements in the relevant science. There are three central c ...

We present a novel technique of neutron noise detection and experimental data interpretation developed during the EU H2020 project CORTEX aiming to improve the capabilities for identification and localization of neutron noise sources. The experimental data ...

The presence of gas species other than the target adsorbate in practical conditions causes complications in implementing a sorption-based process because of synergistic or detrimental effects on the sorption mechanism. MgO-based sorbents have attracted mas ...

The interior transmission eigenvalue problem is a system of partial differential equations equipped with Cauchy data on the boundary: the transmission conditions. This problem appears in the inverse scattering theory for inhomogeneous media when, for some ...

Polynomial neural networks (PNNs) have been recently shown to be particularly effective at image generation and face recognition, where high-frequency information is critical. Previous studies have revealed that neural networks demonstrate a spectral bias ...

In the fields of microgripping and microassembly, the self-alignment motion of a solid micro-object linked by a liquid meniscus to a substrate or a tool is an inexpensive way to overcome the current limitations of the assembly processes at microscale by ge ...

In many applications, such as textiles, fibreglass, paper and several kinds of biological fibrous tissues, the main load-bearing constituents at the micro-scale are arranged as a fibre network. In these materials, rupture is usually driven by micro-mechani ...

Conjugation spaces are topological spaces equipped with an involution such that their fixed points have the same mod 2 cohomology (as a graded vector space, a ring and even an unstable algebra) but with all degrees divided by two, generalizing the classica ...

We show that for a large class C of finitely generated groups of orientation preserving homeomorphisms of the real line, the following holds: Given a group G of rank k in C, there is a sequence of k-markings (G,S-n), n is an element of N whose limit in the ...

As of today, the extension of the human visual capabilities to machines remains both a cornerstone and an open challenge in the attempt to develop intelligent systems. On the one hand, the development of more and more sophisticated imaging devices, capable ...

The jamming transition of non-spherical particles is fundamentally different from the spherical case. Non-spherical particles are hypostatic at their jamming points, while isostaticity is ensured in the case of the jamming of spherical particles. This stru ...

Amatoxins are ribosomally synthesized and post-translationally modified bicyclic octapeptides biosynthesized by the deadly basidiomycete fungus Amanita phalloides. Amongst this group, alpha-amanitin is the most widely known toxin and is currently under inv ...

Localization of a set of nodes is an important and a thoroughly researched problem in robotics and sensor networks. This paper is concerned with the theory of localization from inner-angle measurements. We focus on the challenging case where no anchor loca ...

In this paper, we propose an algorithm to detect a specific kind of distortions, referred to as seams, which commonly occur when a 360-degree image is represented in planar domain by projecting the sphere to a polyhedron, e.g, via the Cube Map (CM) project ...

This dissertation investigates the amenability of topological full groups using a property of group actions called extensive amenability. Extensive amenability is a core concept of several amenability results for groups of dynamical origin. We study its pr ...

We present a weak form implementation of the nonlinear axisymmetric shell equations. This implementation is suitable to study the nonlinear deformations of axisymmetric shells, with the capability of considering a general mid-surface shape, non-homogeneous ...
