Stem and progenitor cells residing in the intestinal crypts drive the majority of colorectal cancers (CRCs), yet vascular contribution to this niche remains largely unexplored. Vascular endothelial growth factor A (VEGFA) is a key driver of physiological a ...

Neuro-vascular communication is essential to synchronize central nervous system development. Here, we identify angiopoietin/Tie2 as a neuro-vascular signaling axis involved in regulating dendritic morphogenesis of Purkinje cells (PCs). We show that in the ...

A flow directed device adapted to be guided by a fuid, such as blood, flow within a tubular structure such as a blood vessel is disclosed, said device comprising a proximal end (100), a distal end (101) and an elongated body (102) in between defining a lon ...

Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer-associated deaths worldwide. Platinum-based chemotherapy is the most common therapeutic approach in advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), particularly for tumors that carry non-druggable activating mutation ...

The common experimental use of B16-F10 melanoma cells focuses on exploring their metastatic potential following intravenous injection into mice. In this study, B16-F10 cells are used to develop a primary tumor model by implanting them directly into the ear ...

Lymphangiogenesis occurs in inflammation and wound healing, yet its functional roles in these processes are not fully understood. Consequently, clinically relevant strategies for therapeutic lymphangiogenesis remain underdeveloped, particularly using growt ...

Despite extensive research, pro-angiogenic drugs have failed to translate clinically, and therapeutic angiogenesis, which has potential in the treatment of various cardiovascular diseases, remains a major challenge. Physiologically, angiogenesis - the proc ...

With a view toward reduction of graft loss, we explored pancreatic islet transplantation within fibrin matrices rendered pro-angiogenic by incorporation of minimal doses of vascular endothelial growth factor-A165 and platelet-derived growth factor-BB prese ...

Biomechanical forces, such as fluid shear stress, govern multiple aspects of endothelial cell biology. In blood vessels, disturbed flow is associated with vascular diseases, such as atherosclerosis, and promotes endothelial cell proliferation and apoptosis ...

Tumor relapse after chemotherapy-induced regression is a major clinical problem, because it often involves inoperable metastatic disease. Tumor-associated macrophages (TAM) are known to limit the cytotoxic effects of chemotherapy in preclinical models of c ...

TIE2-expressing macrophages cluster around blood vessels and sustain tumor angiogenesis. Harney and colleagues now use live imaging of mouse mammary tumors to show that these perivascular macrophages also promote the transient opening of tumor blood vessel ...

Analysis of brain ultrastructure using electron microscopy typically relies on chemical fixation. However, this is known to cause significant tissue distortion including a reduction in the extracellular space. Cryo fixation is thought to give a truer repre ...

Over the last two decades, we have witnessed an increasing application of mathematical models and numerical simulations for the study of the cardiovascular system. Indeed, both tools provide an important contribution to the analysis of the functioning of t ...

Synergy in the downstream signaling pathways of the vascular endothelial growth factor receptor-2 (VEGFR-2) and the integrin alpha v beta 3 is critical for blood vessel formation. Thus, agents that activate both receptors could possess efficient pro-angiog ...

Acute mobilization of circulating endothelial progenitors has been implicated in tumor resistance to vascular-disrupting agents. In the current issue of Cancer Discovery, Taylor and colleagues provide novel insight into the kinetics of endothelial progenit ...

Endothelial cells (ECs) in blood vessels under formation are stabilized by the recruitment of pericytes, both in normal tissues and during angiogenesis in pathologic situations, including neoplasia. In the tumor vasculature, besides supporting the function ...

PHD2 serves as an oxygen sensor that rescues blood supply by regulating vessel formation and shape in case of oxygen shortage. However, it is unknown whether PHD2 can influence arteriogenesis. Here we studied the role of PHD2 in collateral artery growth by ...

This thesis is a contribution to the field of interstitial cells of Cajal-like cells (ICC-LCs) in the vasculature. Indeed, cells with irregular shapes and numerous long thin filaments, morphologically similar to the gastrointestinal ICCs, have been observe ...

Angiogenesis is the process by which new blood vessels arise from existing ones by the budding out of endothelial cell capillaries from the luminal side of blood vessels. Blood vessel formation is essential for organ development during embryogenesis and is ...

Formation of new vessels in granulation tissue during wound healing has been assumed to occur solely through sprouting angiogenesis. In contrast, we show here that neovascularization can be accomplished by nonangiogenic expansion of preexisting vessels. Us ...
