The correctness of a shared object, which can be accessed by several processes concurrently, is specified through two different kinds of properties - safety and liveness. When implementing a shared object it is important to specify its correctness in a suc ...

Transactional memory is a promising way for implementing efficient synchronization mechanisms for multicore processors. Intel's introduction of hardware transactional memory (HTM) into their Haswell line of processors marks an important step toward mainstr ...

Concurrency bugs are at the heart of some of the worst bugs that plague software. Concurrency bugs slow down software development because it can take weeks or even months before developers can identify and fix them. In-production detection, root cause ...

Clock-SI is a fully distributed protocol that implements snapshot isolation (SI) for partitioned data stores. It derives snapshot and commit timestamps from loosely synchronized clocks, rather than from a centralized timestamp authority as used in current ...

We show that it is impossible to design a transactional memory system which ensures parallelism, i.e. transactions do not need to synchronize unless they access the same application objects, while ensuring very little consistency, i.e. a consistency condit ...

The shift to multi-core and multi-socket hardware brings new challenges to database systems, as the software parallelism determines performance. Even though database systems traditionally accommodate simultaneous requests, a multitude of synchronization ba ...

Most existing distributed systems use logical clocks to order events in the implementation of various consistency models. Although logical clocks are straightforward to implement and maintain, they may affect the scalability, availability, and latency of t ...

Linearizability is a key design methodology for reasoning about implementations of concurrent abstract data types in both shared memory and message passing systems. It provides the illusion that operations execute sequentially and fault-free, despite the a ...

Recent trends have led hardware manufacturers to place multiple processing cores on a single chip, making parallel programming the intended way of taking advantage of the increased processing power. However, bringing concurrency to average programmers is c ...

The recent proliferation of multi-core processors has moved concurrent programming into mainstream by forcing increasingly more programmers to write parallel code. Using traditional concurrency techniques, such as locking, is notoriously difficult and has ...
