The expeditious proliferation of Internet connectivity and the growing adoption of digital products have transformed various spheres of our everyday lives. This increased digitization of society has led to the emergence of new applications, which are deplo ...

RECIPE (REliable power and time-ConstraInts-aware Predictive management of heterogeneous Exascale systems) is a recently started project funded within the H2020 FETHPC programme, which is expressly targeted at exploring new High-Performance Computing (HPC) ...

Performance and power constraints come together with Complementary Metal Oxide Semiconductor technology scaling in future Exascale systems. Technology scaling makes each individual transistor more prone to faults and, due to the exponential increase in the ...

In order to get a better understanding of the interaction of plasma microinstabilities and associated turbulence with specific modes, an antenna is implemented in the global gyrokinetic Particle-In-Cell (PIC) code ORB5. It consists in applying an external ...

We propose a novel, minimally intrusive approach to adding fault tolerance to existing complex scientific simulation codes, used for addressing a broad range of time-dependent problems on the next generation of supercomputers. Exascale systems have the pot ...

This paper presents a strategy for providing reliable state estimates that allow a group of robots to realize a formation even when communication fails and the tracking data alone is insufficient for maintaining a stable formation. Furthermore, the trackin ...

The first Petascale supercomputer, the IBM Roadrunner, went online in 2008. Ten years later, the community is now looking ahead to a new generation of Exascale machines. During the decade that has passed, several hundred Petascale capable machines have bee ...

Transaction processing is a mission critical enterprise application that runs on high-end servers. Traditionally, transaction processing systems have been designed for uniform core-to-core communication latencies. In the past decade, with the emergence of ...

The increased number of cores integrated on a chip has brought about a number of challenges. Concerns about the scalability of cache coherence protocols have urged both researchers and practitioners to explore alternative programming models, where cache co ...

The high failure rate expected for future supercomputers requires the design of new fault tolerant solutions. Most checkpointing protocols are designed to work with any message-passing application but suffer from scalability issues at extreme scale. We tak ...

In this thesis we study the efficient implementation of the finite element method for the numerical solution of partial differential equations (PDE) on modern parallel computer archi- tectures, such as Cray and IBM supercomputers. The domain-decomposition ...

High performance computing will probably reach exascale in this decade. At this scale, mean time between failures is expected to be a few hours. Existing fault tolerant protocols for message passing applications will not be efficient anymore since they eit ...

The combination of low cost clusters and multicore processors lowers the barrier for accessing massive amounts of computing power. As computational sciences advance, the use of in silico simulations to complement in vivo experiments promises parallel progr ...

Coordination cages based on organometallic half-sandwich complexes are of interest, because they can display unique structures and host properties. This communication describes the synthesis and structure of a cylindrical nanostructure containing six (p-cy ...

In the world of High Performance Computing (newly renamed "High Productivity Computing"), where the race for performance is on, where the hunt for the last Flop rages and where the developers swear by the Cult of Power, the different applications have diff ...

Transportation safety, one of the main driving forces of the development of vehicular communication (VC) systems, relies on high-rate safety messaging (beaconing). At the same time, there is consensus among authorities, industry, and academia on the need t ...

Within only a couple of generations, the so-called digital revolution has taken the world by storm: today, almost all human beings interact, directly or indirectly, at some point in their life, with a computer system. Computers are present on our desks, co ...

Our vectorized Helmholtz solver runs at 85% efficiency on a NEC SX-5. The most time-consuming parts have been ported on SMP, NUMA, and cluster architectures. It is shown that an OpenMP version can deliver similar performance when running it on a 16 process ...

The communication shows an alternative for introducing soil-structure interaction in the analysis of cut-and-cover tunnels. An uncoupled method is illustrated through two examples representative of the situations found in practice. The main features of eac ...

Nowadays, computers are the indispensable part of our life. They evolve rapidly and are more and more versatile. Computer networks made the remote corners of the world just a click away. But unavoidably, any software and hardware component is subject to fa ...
