The cavity method is one of the cornerstones of the statistical physics of disordered systems such as spin glasses and other complex systems. It is able to analytically and asymptotically exactly describe the equilibrium properties of a broad range of mode ...

Mainstream approaches to design spatial architectural forms that are structurally relevant consist either in adapting well-known and catalogued conventional types or in searching for close-to-optimum solutions of well-defined problems. Few means exist to e ...

The modeling of the probability of joint default or total number of defaults among the firms is one of the crucial problems to mitigate the credit risk since the default correlations significantly affect the portfolio loss distribution and hence play a sig ...

We develop theory and methodology for the problem of nonparametric registration of functional data that have been subjected to random deformation (warping) of their time scale. The separation of this phase variation ("horizontal" variation) from the amplit ...

We present a comprehensive study about the relationship between the way detailed balance is broken in non-equilibrium systems and the resulting violations of the fluctuation-dissipation theorem. Starting from stochastic dynamics with both odd and even vari ...

Aberration corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) with high angle annular dark field (HAADF) imaging and the newly developed annular bright field (ABF) imaging are used to define a new guideline for the polarity determination of semicon ...

We study asymmetric zero-range processes on Z with nearest-neighbour jumps and site disorder. The jump rate of particles is an arbitrary but bounded nondecreasing function of the number of particles. For any given environment satisfying suitable averaging ...

An epidemic spreading in a network calls for a decision on the part of the network members: They should decide whether to protect themselves or not. Their decision depends on the trade off between their perceived risk of being infected and the cost of bein ...

Process intensification is a vibrating topic in the field of chemical engineering. Its aim is to develop processes and methods with increased performance for a given chemical transformation at decreased energy consumption and waste production. Among all me ...

It is well known and readily seen that the maximum of n independent and uniformly on [0, 1] distributed random variables, suitably standardised, converges in total variation distance, as n increases, to the standard negative exponential distribution. We ex ...

A general framework to describe a vast majority of biology-inspired systems is to model them as stochastic processes in which multiple couplings are in play at the same time. Molecular motors, chemical reaction networks, catalytic enzymes, and particles ex ...

Two biomass gasification concepts, i.e. indirectly heated, steam blown fluidised bed gasification and directly heated, air blown fixed bed gasification are modelled with adjusted equilibrium equations, their energy requirements are integrated and an exergy ...

In self-organizing ad hoc networks, all the networking functions rely on the contribution of the participants. As a basic example, nodes have to forward packets for each other in order to enable multi-hop communication. In recent years, incentive mechanism ...

Environmental Context. The chemical speciation of trace metals greatly influences their biological effects. Nonetheless, no clear consensus currently exists as to when metal complexes are bioavailable, especially for field conditions. Recently, the USA EPA ...

Low pressure plasma spraying (LPPS) is a thermal spraying technique that has found a niche for low oxidation products. It uses a low pressure environment (i.e:, chamber pressure between 2 and 90 kPa) and yields supersonic plasma jets. The enthalpy probe te ...

We study the k-server problem in the resource augmentation setting, i.e., when the performance of the online algorithm with k servers is compared to the offline optimal solution with h

Low Pressure Plasma Spraying (LPPS) processes use a DC plasma jet expanding at low pressure for fast deposition of dense coatings in a controlled atmosphere. The LPPS technology is widely used industrially in particular in the aeronautics and medical indus ...

This paper investigates the stability of departure time choice within a population of commuters that need to pass through a bottleneck of constant capacity. It is shown that the corresponding utility function is monotonic if and only if the marginal utilit ...

We consider the stationary flow of an inviscid and incompressible fluid of constant density in the region D = (0, L) x R-2. We are concerned with flows that are periodic in the second and third variables and that have prescribed flux through each point of ...

Droughts pose a significant challenge to farmers, insurers as well as governments around the world and the situation is expected to worsen in the future due to climate change. We present a large scale drought risk assessment approach that can be used for c ...
