One-Dimensional Transient Analysis of Rainfall Infiltration in Unsaturated Volcanic Ash

Résumé

The paper presents a one-dimensional hydro-mechanical analysis of rainfall infiltration in a loose volcanic ash and the utilisation of a factor of safety for the implementation of an early-warning system. Three different rainy seasons with different rainfall patterns were analysed. The analysis aims to understand the influence of the antecedent rainfall on the wetting front, the pore-water pressures and the factor of safety. The analysis was carried out in the context of a Master project of the first author at the Laboratory for Soil Mechanics of EPFL.

Infiltration (hydrologie)

L'infiltration désigne en hydrologie et sciences de la terre, le processus par lequel l'eau pénètre le sol ou un autre substrat à partir de la surface du sol ou du substrat. Si le taux de précipitations dépasse le taux d'infiltration (et d'évaporation-évapotranspiration, l'évapotranspiration potentielle), un phénomène de ruissellement se produit habituellement, sauf s'il existe une barrière physique.

Ruissellement

En hydrologie, le ruissellement ou ruissèlement est l'écoulement des eaux à la surface de la terre, notamment la surface des sols, contrairement à celle y pénétrant par infiltration. L'intensité des précipitations favorise le ruissellement en proportion de l'insuffisance de l'infiltration et de la capacité de rétention de la surface du sol.

Cendre volcanique

Ces particules sont si fines qu'elles peuvent voyager sur des centaines de kilomètres et retomber sur le sol sous forme de pluies de cendres. Lorsque les cendres sont éjectées en grande quantité, elles se cimentent généralement pour former une roche que l'on nomme tuf.
