Thin foldable origami mechanisms bring miniaturization and reconfiguration of complex structures allowing large volumetric change, low cost and versatility. Many applications require small robots with multiple capabilities including movement, sensing and c ...

The ITER Integrated Modelling & Analysis Suite (IMAS) will support both plasma operation and research activities on the ITER tokamak experiment. The IMAS will be accessible to all ITER members as a key tool for the scientific exploitation of ITER. The back ...

This paper aims to maximize the profitability of a set of brand SKUs stocked at a particular retailer by optimizing the number of facings for each product. Based on the past data, a set of variables such as retail price of different SKUs, linear footage th ...

In contemporary debates about sustainable development, vernacular architecture plays an important role. Presenting itself as a dictionary of man’s constructive logic, it declares with no uncertainty its own usefulness, its connection to the soil, to the cl ...

A method that exploits an information theoretic framework to extract optimized audio features using video information is presented. A simple measure of mutual information (MI) between the resulting audio and video features allows the detection of the activ ...

Just about every other technical publication you pick up these days makes sweeping statements concerning the pressures on scientists, engineers, and industries as a whole to get to market in less time, with an improved, less expensive product. I am reminde ...

The era of distributed systems is upon us. The Internet revolution, combined with the recent explosion of smart devices, indicate a clear trend toward ubiquitous and pervasive computing that will continue to change the way people live and interact, the way ...

Anewanalytical modeling approach for piezoelectric bending elements is described. The approach is based on the beam theory under quasi-static equilibrium condition. It uses the theory of superposition of piezoelectric action in the bender and external mome ...

This thesis deals with dynamic optimization of batch processes, i.e. processes that are characterized by a finite time of operation and the frequent repetition of batches. The objective is to maximize the quantity of the desired product at final time while ...

The aim of this dissertation is to solve numerically the following problem, denoted by P : given a Riemannian manifold and two points a and b belonging to that manifold, find a tangent vector T at a, such that expa(T) = b, assuming that T exists. This prob ...

In industrial polymerization processes, several grades of polymer are frequently produced in the same plant by changing the operating conditions. Transitions between the different grades are rather slow and result in the production of a considerable amount ...

Intrinsic, thermal, and hygroscopic contributions to the in-plane residual stress in silicon nitride films on polyimide substrates are identified, based on iso- hygric thermal ramps and isothermal relative humidity jumps, combined with non-linear elastic m ...

In 1971, the first microprocessor produced in mass production had 2300 transistor and was able to compute 60'000 operations per second at 740 kHz. Nowadays, even a common gaming console uses a central unit including 243 millions of transistors running at 4 ...

Data-driven controller tuning for model reference control problem is investigated. A new controller tuning scheme for linear time-invariant single- input single-output systems is proposed. The method, which is based on the correlation approach, uses a sing ...

There has been a significant growth in freight traffic over the last few decades in Europe. The Alps, located in the middle of North-South route, are particularly sensitive regarding this evolution because of their topographic and climatic characteristics. ...

This paper describes ModelLib, a web-based platform for collecting models from different domains (e.g. electrical, mechanical) and levels of abstractions. Use cases for this tool are presented, which show how it can support the design~process of complex AM ...

The road to a successful introduction of vehicular communications has to pass through the analysis of potential security threats and the design of a robust security architecture able to cope with these threats. In this paper, we undertake this challenge. I ...

Most of the life cycle cost of a product can be pre-determined by the end of the conceptual design phase, which begins with the establishment of a function structure by decomposing an overall function into a set of sub-functions. However, today's products ...

This paper presents a method to model and optimize brushless dc motor for a solar airplane. In order to obtain the optimal solution for the given specifications, all free parameters are analyzed globally in one go. For this, the commercial optimization sof ...

The dissipation of energy of flood discharges from water releasing structures of dams is often done by plunging jets diffusing in water and impacting on the riverbed downstream. The construction of expensive concrete structures for energy dissipation can b ...
