Recent surging interest in strengthening of High Entropy Alloys (HEAs) with possible chemical ordering motivates the development of new theory. Here, an existing theory for random alloys that accounts for solute-dislocation and solute–solute interactions i ...

The microstructure evolution associated with the cold forming sequence of an Fe-14Cr-1W-0.3Ti-0.3Y2O3 grade ferritic stainless steel strengthened by dispersion of nano oxides (ODS) was investigated. The material, initially hot extruded at 1100 degrees C an ...

Mo-Ti alloys form solid solutions over a wide range of compositions, with lattice misfit parameters increasing significantly with titanium content. This indicates a strong increase in the critical stress for edge dislocation motion. Here, we probe the tran ...

Prismatic slip in magnesium at temperatures T

Metal plasticity is an inherently multiscale phenomenon due to the complex long-range field of atomistic dislocations that are the primary mechanism for plastic deformation in metals. Atomistic/Continuum (A/C) coupling methods are computationally efficient ...

This study investigated the origin of the enhanced pseudo-elasticity of additively manufactured vanadium carbide-containing Fe-based shape memory alloys. The aged samples with two different starting microstructures, as-built and solution-treated, showed co ...

The multidimensionality of the stress response has shown the complexity of this phenomenon and therefore the impossibility of finding a unique biomarker among the physiological variables related to stress. An experimental study was designed and performed t ...

The stress state is an important parameter in terms of both earthquake nucleation and rupture. Here, a new stimulation technique is proposed for Enhanced Geothermal Systems (EGSs), which have previously been burdened with a number of high-profile incidence ...

Tuning the mechanical properties of metals, including strength, through adjusting the type and/or concentration of added solute elements, has been recognized as an effective way to design and produce materials with desired or optimized mechanical propertie ...

Body-centered-cubic (BCC) high entropy alloys (HEAs) can show exceptionally high strength up to high temperatures. Mechanistic theories are needed to guide alloy discovery within the immense multicomponent HEA compositional space. Here, two new theories fo ...

Many metal alloys are strengthened by controlling precipitation to achieve an optimal peak-aged condi-tion where the strength-limiting processes of precipitate shearing and Orowan looping are thought to be comparable. Qualitative models have long captured ...

Most metallurgical properties, e.g., dislocation propagation, precipitate formation, can only be fully understood atomistically but most phenomena and quantities of interest cannot be measured experimentally. Accurate simulation methods are essential but f ...

While sliding at seismic slip-rates of ∼1 m/s, natural faults undergo an abrupt decrease of shear stress called dynamic weakening. Asperity-scale processes related to flash heating and weakening and, meso-scale (mm-cm) processes involving shear across the ...

Laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) was used to consolidate powders of a Ni-Cr-Fe-Mo alloy (Hastelloy X) blended with 1 wt% Y2O3 nanometric powders. The nearly-dense, crack-free specimens, with and without oxide dispersion strengthening (ODS), exhibit high-aspe ...

We present a systematic investigation of {10 (1) over bar2} extension twinning mechanism in single crystal magnesium micropillars deformed over seven orders of magnitude of strain rate, from 10(-4) to 500 s(-1), revealing how the accommodation of newly for ...

A microcasting process is used to produce high aspect ratio ( > 30) monocrystalline pure aluminium wires with a diameter between 14 and 115 mu m. The role of thermal activation in the plastic deformation of these microwires is measured by means of (single) ...

Plastic deformation in elemental BCC metals and dilute alloys is controlled by the slower of the kink pair nucleation and kink migration processes along screw dislocations. In alloys nucleation is facilitated and migration inhibited, leading to a concentra ...

Twinning in fcc High Entropy Alloys (HEAs) has been implicated as a possible mechanism for hardening that enables enhanced ductility. Here, a theory for the twinning stress is developed analogous to recent theories for yield stress. Specifically, the stres ...

Precipitation strengthening is one of the key strengthening strategies in many industrial alloys like aluminum alloys, nickel-based superalloys, etc. The yield strength of alloy is improved by forming precipitates in materials and employing them as obstacl ...

Recent theory proposes that edge dislocations in random body-centered cubic (BCC) high entropy alloys have high barriers for motion, conveying high strengths up to high temperatures. Here, the energy barriers for edge motion are computed for two model allo ...
