In this paper, we present a new parameterization and optimization procedure for minimizing the weight of ribbed plates. The primary goal is to reduce embodied CO2 in concrete floors as part of the effort to diminish the carbon footprint of the construction ...

The Alaskan Layered Pollution And Chemical Analysis (ALPACA) field experiment was a collaborative study designed to improve understanding of pollution sources and chemical processes during winter (cold climate and low-photochemical activity), to investigat ...

Studies of cybersickness (CS) often require a significant invest- ment in creating the primary VR environment and other experiment- related features. In addition, minor differences in VR content in independent studies may lead to opposite results. This mot ...

This paper focuses on 5G RAN slicing, where the 5G radio resources must be divided across slices (or enterprises) so as to achieve high spectrum efficiency, fairness and isolation across slices, and the ability for each slice to customize how the radio res ...

Exploring a wide range of design options is crucial for every sound conceptual design process. In the conventional structural design workflow, optimization techniques are generally employed to generate well-performing design options. However, focusing only ...

Encouraging a modal shift from individual transportation to less polluting modes such as public transport, walking and cycling, is now a key recommendation of the UN to reach the goals set by the Paris Agreement. Achieving this ambitious goal requires a de ...

BACKGROUND: Objective mobility goals for elderly hospitalised medical patients remain debated. We therefore studied steps parameters of elderly patients hospitalised for an acute illness, to determine goals for future interventional trials and medical prac ...

Magnetorheological (MR) fluids are materials characterized as “intelligent” since their rheological properties may be controlled by the excitation of an external magnetic field. The application of the latter brings the fluid from a liquid to a semi-solid s ...

We adopted an achievement goal complex framework (studying achievement goals and reasons connected to goals) to determine when and why performance goals predict exploitation of others' knowledge. We hypothesized that: (i) when selective assessment is used ...

What-if analysis is a data-intensive exploration to inspect how changes in a set of input parameters of a model influence some outcomes. It is motivated by a user trying to understand the sensitivity of a model to a certain parameter in order to reach a se ...

Bettering human health care and creating a sustainable environment through monitoring and smart energy usage are primary goals of advanced societies. To this purpose, the Swiss Government, through the State Secretariat for Education, Research, and Innovati ...

In this paper, we present work on learning analytics that aims to support learners and teachers through dashboard applications, ranging from small mobile applications to learnscapes on large public displays. Dashboards typically capture and visualize trace ...

Advances in the development of micro- and nanostructured surfaces have enabled tremendous progress in delineation of mechanisms in boiling heat transfer and have propelled the rapid enhancement of heat transfer rates. This area of research is poised to mak ...

In games, the goals and interests of players are key factors in their behavior. However, techniques used by networked games to cope with infrequent updates and message loss, such as dead reckoning, estimate a player's movements based mainly on previous obs ...

Design correctness and performance are major issues which are usually considered separately, and with different emphasis, by traditional system design flows. In this paper we show that one can meaningfully connect and benefit from the advantages of two des ...

As more people through different modes compete for the limited urban space that is set aside to serve transport, there is an increasing need to understand details of how this space is used and how it can be managed to improve accessibility for everyone. Ul ...

Scalable video coding is a powerful solution for content delivery in many interactive multimedia services due to its adaptability to varying terminal and network constraints. In order to successfully exploit such adaptability, it is necessary to understand ...
