The sensing of left ventricular (LV) activity is fundamental in the diagnosis and monitoring of cardiovascular health in high-risk patients after cardiac surgery to achieve better short- and long-term outcome. Conventional approaches rely on noninvasive me ...

Background and Objective: Computational models of the cardiovascular system allow for a detailed and quantitative investigation of both physiological and pathological conditions, thanks to their ability to combine clinical-possibly patient-specific-data wi ...

Background: The impact of acute unilateral injury on spontaneous electrical activity in both vagus nerves at the heart level is poorly understood. We investigated the immediate neuroelectrical response after right or left cardiac vagal nerve transection (V ...

The integration of technology in the medical field has greatly improved accuracy in diagnoses, thus leading to more effective treatments. Wearable and implantable medical devices offer great potential for remote patient monitoring, particularly for heart f ...

IntroductionArterial wave reflection is an important component of the left ventricular afterload, affecting both pressure and flow to the aorta. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the impact of wave reflection on transvalvular pressure gradients ...

This paper presents a novel method for the measure of the cross-sectional area (CSA) of an artery to be used for the direct and continuous (24/7) monitoring of cardiac output (CO). The method is based on the inductance change of an anchoring loop mounted o ...

This paper presents an energy-efficient, duty-cycled, and spinning excitation bridge-to-digital converter (BDC) suitable for measuring the pulmonary artery pressure of heart failure patients with an implantable system. The duty-cycled bridge uses resistanc ...

Our aim is to develop a 3D model unit of cardiac muscle: an in-vitro analog of the trabeculae carneae found in vivo. As a base hydrogel matrix for cardiomyocyte culture in 3D, we develop a blend of decellularized extracellular matrix (dECM) and fibrin. Thi ...

Goal: We introduce a novel approach to estimate cardiac output (CO) and central systolic blood pressure (cSBP) from noninvasive measurements of peripheral cuff-pressure and carotid-to-femoral pulse wave velocity (cf-PWV). Methods: The adjustment of a previ ...

Ageing is a natural process that affects both the anatomical and functional properties of the cardiovascular system and alters the coupling characteristics between the heart and the aorta. These alterations may predispose the cardiovascular system in the d ...

The evaluation of cardiac contractility by the assessment of the ventricular systolic elastance function is clinically challenging and cannot be easily obtained at the bedside. In this work, we present a framework characterizing left ventricular systolic f ...

Photoplethysmography (PPG)-based monitoring devices will probably play a decisive role in healthcare environment of the future, which will be preventive, predictive, personalized and participatory. Indeed, this optical technology presents several practical ...

The monitoring of central hemodynamic parameters such as cardiac output (CO) and pulmonary artery pressure (PAP) is of paramount clinical importance to assess the health status of the cardiovascular system. However, their measurement requires the insertion ...

BACKGROUND: The use of left ventricular assist devices (LVADs) to treat advanced cardiac heart failure is constantly increasing, although this device leads to high risk for gastrointestinal bleeding. METHODS: Using in-silico flow analysis, we quantified he ...

During aging, systolic blood pressure continuously increases over time, whereas diastolic pressure first increases and then slightly decreases after middle age. These pressure changes are usually explained by changes of the arterial system alone (increase ...

Surgical or critically ill patients often require continuous assessment of cardiac output (CO) for diagnostic purposes or for guiding therapeutic interventions. A new method of non-invasive CO estimation has been recently developed, which is based on press ...

The monitoring of hemodynamic parameters is crucial for optimal patient management and treatment. However, established methods are often invasive and possibly inapplicable to sensitive age groups. Novel, non-invasive techniques have the potential to transf ...

Purpose Respiratory motion correction remains a challenge in coronary magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and current techniques, such as navigator gating, suffer from sub-optimal scan efficiency and ease-of-use. To overcome these limitations, an image-based ...

Accurate assessment of mice cardiac function with magnetic resonance imaging is essential for longitudinal studies and for drug development related to cardiovascular diseases. Whereas dedicated small animal MR scanners are not readily available, it would b ...

Barth syndrome is an X-linked genetic disorder caused by mutations in the tafazzin (taz) gene and characterized by dilated cardiomyopathy, exercise intolerance, chronic fatigue, delayed growth, and neutropenia. Tafazzin is a mitochondrial transacylase requ ...
