This article describes a field-based analytical model of single-sided linear induction motors (SLIMs) that explicitly considers the following effects altogether: finite motor length, magnetomotive force mmf space harmonics, slot effect, edge effect, and ta ...

We investigate the mechanics of bistable, hard-magnetic, elastic beams, combining experiments, finite-element modelling (FEM) and a reduced-order theory. The beam is made of a hard magneto-rheological elastomer, comprising two segments with antiparallel ma ...

This paper deals with a new analytical model for microfluidic passive mixers. Two common approaches already exist for such a purpose. On the one hand, the resolution of the advection-diffusion-reaction equation (ADRE) is the first one and the closest to ph ...

Buckled beams have become key building blocks in compliant mechanisms to achieve nonlinear behaviors, such as bistability, constant-force and stiffness tuning. However, designing and modeling such components is challenging due to their highly nonlinear cha ...

We present a novel isogeometric method, namely the Immersed Boundary-Conformal Method (IBCM), that features a layer of discretization conformal to the boundary while employing a simple background mesh for the remaining domain. In this manner, we leverage t ...

In this paper, we carry out a systematic comparison between the theoretical properties of Spectral Element Methods and NURBS-based Isogeometric Analysis in its basic form, that is in the framework of the Galerkin method, for the approximation of the Poisso ...

The present invention relates to a semiconductor sensor (1) comprising: a source element (17, 19); a drain element (21, 23); a semiconductor channel element (25) between the source element (17, 19) and the drain element (21, 23) for forming an electrically ...

A boundary-fitted moving mesh scheme is presented for the simulation of two-phase flow in two-dimensional and axisymmetric geometries. The incompressible Navier-Stokes equations are solved using the finite element method, and the mini element is used to sa ...

Short beams are the key building blocks in many compliant mechanisms. Hence, deriving a simple yet accurate model of their elastokinematics is an important issue. Since the Euler-Bernoulli beam theory fails to accurately model these beams, we use the Timos ...

This thesis addresses the development and implementation of efficient and parallel algorithms for the numerical simulation of Fluid-Structure Interaction (FSI) problems in hemodynamics. Indeed, hemodynamic conditions in large arteries are significantly aff ...

The specific features of the proposed force-based formulation derived in the companion paper, which is applied for the first time to higher-order beam theories, are herein thoroughly validated. Introductory numerical examples illustrate the influence of me ...

Mudflows are catastrophic events that cause immense damage to infrastructure and life every year. Local authorities have been trying to mitigate the risk by zoning regulations as well as by building protection structures for many years. These measures have ...

The subject of this thesis is the analysis of discontinuous Galerkin methods for linear partial differential equations of first or second order. Discontinuous Galerkin methods are known to satisfy a local mass conservation property. Taking a closer look on ...

We consider DG-methods for 2nd order scalar elliptic problems using piecewise affine approximation in two or three space dimensions. We prove that both the symmetric and the non-symmetric version of the DG-method have regular system matrices also without pen ...
