We report a soft actuator that generates continuous rotation of an object placed on it by electromagnetically exciting circular travelling waves in a soft disk. The disk, that serves as the stator, is made of a stretchable composite consisting of segments ...

The continuous reduction of the structural size in nanotechnology slowed down over the last decade, approaching the natural limit of single atoms as building blocks of matter. Therefore, intensive research is directed toward exploring new frontiers, in par ...

The development and characterization of resistive humidity sensors based on Chitosan on a glass substrate is reported. The sensor electrodes are made of laser-induced graphene derived from Chitosan, which represents a sustainability advancement by eliminat ...

We develop a reduced-order model for thin plates made of hard magnetorheological elastomers (hard-MREs), which are composed of hard-magnetic particles embedded in a polymeric matrix. First, we propose a new magnetic potential, as an alternative to an exist ...

We investigate the mechanics of bistable, hard-magnetic, elastic beams, combining experiments, finite-element modelling (FEM) and a reduced-order theory. The beam is made of a hard magneto-rheological elastomer, comprising two segments with antiparallel ma ...

High-temperature superconductors (HTSs) enable exclusive operating conditions for fusion magnets, boosting their performance up to 20 T generated magnetic fields in the temperature range from 4 K to 20 K. One of the main technological issues of HTS conduct ...

Conductive domain walls in ferroelectrics offer a promising concept of nanoelectronic circuits with 2D domain-wall channels playing roles of memristors or synoptic interconnections. However, domain wall conduction remains challenging to control and pA-rang ...

Nanocrystalline zinc peroxide (nano-ZnO2) was synthesized through a hydrothermal process and comprehensively studied using several experimental techniques. Its crystal structure was characterized by X-ray diffraction, and the average crystallite size of 22 ...

MoS2 micro-pyramids have demonstrated interesting properties in the fields of photonics and non-linear optics. In this work, we show the excitonic absorption and cathodoluminescence (CL) emission of MoS2 micro-pyramids grown by chemical vapor deposition (C ...

We investigate bulk and interface recombination in crystalline silicon with p-type fired passivating contacts. These consist of a chemical oxide and an in-situ doped layer of SiCx with low carbon content. Following a rapid thermal annealing to activate the ...

Dynamic nuclear polarization (DNP) is a method that can significantly increase the sensitivity of nuclear magnetic resonance. The only effective DNP mechanism for in situ hyperpolarization in solution is Overhauser DNP, which is inefficient for H-1 at high ...

The magnetic properties and the atomic scale morphology of bimetallic two-dimensional nanoislands, epitaxially grown on fcc(111) metal surfaces, have been studied by means of Magneto-Optical Kerr Effect and Scanning Tunneling Microscopy. We investigate the ...

Along with recent advancements in thin-film technologies, the engineering of complex transition metal oxide heterostructures offers the possibility of creating novel and tunable multifunctionalities. A representative complex oxide is the perovskite stronti ...

Ferroelectric perovskite oxides are widely used in sensors, actuators and optical modulators and, at the same time, they show promise for implementation in future applications such as energy storage, memory and cooling devices. At the infancy of the discov ...

This thesis presents investigations of magnetic and structural properties of two dimensional metal-organic frameworks and of single atoms, both adsorbed on decoupling layers grown on metal surfaces, with focus on rare earth elements. We first report on a ...

Technological advancement has been in cadence with material development by improving the purity of single crystals and, at the same time, controlling their imperfections. These capabilities have been especially vital for developing new technolo-gies based ...

Thin beams made of magnetorheological elastomers embedded with hard-magnetic particles (hard-MREs) are capable of large deflections under an applied magnetic field. We propose a comprehensive framework, comprising a beam model and 3D finite element modelin ...

In this Account, we describe the challenges and promising applications of transmission electron microscopy (TEM) imaging and spectroscopy at cryogenic temperatures. Our work focuses on two areas of application: the delay of electron-beam-induced degradatio ...

Nanoscale mapping of the distinct electronic phases characterizing the metal-insulator transition displayed by most of the rare-earth nickelate compounds is fundamental for discovering the true nature of this transition and the possible couplings that are ...

The creep motion of domain walls driven by external fields in magnetic thin films is described by universal features related to the underlying depinning transition. One key parameter in this description is the roughness exponent characterizing the growth o ...
