We study the glass transition by exploring a broad class of kinetic rules that can significantly modify the normal dynamics of supercooled liquids while maintaining thermal equilibrium. Beyond the usual dynamics of liquids, this class includes dynamics in ...

Which phenomenon slows down the dynamics in supercooled liquids and turns them into glasses is a long-standing question of condensed matter. Most popular theories posit that as the temperature decreases, many events must occur in a coordinated fashion on a ...

We present a numerical model for the approximation of multiphase flows with free surfaces and strong interfacial effects. The model relies on the multiphase incompressible Navier-Stokes equations, and includes surface tension effects on the interfaces betw ...

Mitigating the energy requirements of artificial intelligence requires novel physical substrates for computation. Phononic metamaterials have vanishingly low power dissipation and hence are a prime candidate for green, always-on computers. However, their u ...

The SMall Aspect Ratio Tokamak (SMART) under commissioning at the University of Seville, Spain, aims to explore confinement properties and possible advantages in confinement for compact/spherical tokamaks operating at negative vs. positive triangularity. T ...

We provide a theoretical description of dynamical heterogeneities in glass-forming liquids, based on the premise that relaxation occurs via local rearrangements coupled by elasticity. In our framework, the growth of the dynamical correlation length e and o ...

The dynamical properties of water molecules confinedin the unidirectionalhydrophilic nanopores of AlPO4-54 are investigated withquasi-elastic neutron scattering as a function of temperature downto 118 K. AlPO4-54 has among the largest pores known foralumin ...

Rare events include many of the most interesting transformation processes in condensed matter, from phase transitions to biomolecular conformational changes to chemical reactions. Access to the corresponding mechanisms, free-energy landscapes and kinetic r ...

A unified numerical framework is presented for the modelling of multiphasic viscoelastic and elastic flows. The rheologies considered range from incompressible Newtonian or Oldroyd-B viscoelastic fluids to Neo-Hookean elastic solids. The model is formulate ...

The fundamental aspiration of new-generation high-performing buildings is to reduce energy use while securing indoor environmental quality conducive to human health and productivity. However, existing frameworks for identifying Key Performance Indicators ( ...

For decades transition-metal oxides have generated a huge interest due to the multitude of physical phenomena they exhibit. In this class of materials, the rare-earth nickelates, RNiO3, stand out for their rich phase diagram stemming from complex couplings ...

The electronic density of states (DOS) quantifies the distribution of the energy levels that can be occupied by electrons in a quasiparticle picture and is central to modern electronic structure theory. It also underpins the computation and interpretation ...

Diffusion is one of the most important phenomena studied in science ranging from physics to biology and, in abstract form, even in social sciences. In the field of materials science, diffusion in crystalline solids is of particular interest as it plays a p ...

The atomic motion controls important properties of materials, such as thermal transport, phase transitions, and vibrational spectra. However, simulating the ionic dynamics is exceptionally challenging when quantum fluctuations are relevant (e.g., at low te ...

The complex mechanics of porous and granular media play a significant role in various industrial processes and natural phenomena. As an example, understanding the mechanics of how failure occurs, localizes and propagates in porous brittle solids under vari ...

Accurate simulations of molecular quantum dynamics are crucial for understanding numerous natural processes and experimental results. Yet, such high-accuracy simulations are challenging even for relatively simple systems where the Born-Oppenheimer approxim ...

In this work we study microwimmers, whether colloids or polymers, embedded in bulk or in confinement. We explicitly consider hydrodynamic interactions and simulate the swimmers via an implementation inspired by the squirmer model. Concerning the surroundin ...

Recent advances in computational neuroscience have demonstrated the usefulness and importance of stochastic, spatial reaction-diffusion simulations. However, ever increasing model complexity renders traditional serial solvers, as well as naive parallel imp ...

The formation of water columns inside the gas diffusion layer (GDL) of the proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC), which is harmful phenomenon, can be controlled by the GDL's microstructure and material. Using computational fluid dynamics (CFD), a thre ...

If one carries out a molecular simulation ofNparticlesusing periodic boundary conditions, linear momentum is conserved, and hence, the number of degrees of freedom is set to 3N-3. Inmost programs, this number of degrees of freedom is the defaultsetting. How ...
