Chondrocytes within articular cartilage possess the capacity to perceive and react to signals generated by the typical load-bearing actions of daily life, such as walking or running. Articular cartilage is predominantly oriented toward compression-based fu ...

The drive to develop cartilage implants for the treatment of major defects in the musculoskeletal sys-tem has resulted in a major research thrust towards developing biomaterial devices for cartilage repair. Investigational devices for the restoration of ar ...

Islet transplantation is a promising approach for the treatment of type 1 diabetes (T1D). Currently, clinical islet transplantation is limited by allo - and autoimmunity that may cause partial or complete loss of islet function within a short period of tim ...

Throughout nature, organisms fabricate a myriad of materials to sustain their lifestyle. Many of the soft materials are composed of water-swollen networks of organic molecules, so-called hydrogels. They generally contribute to the mechanical integrity of t ...

Our aim is to develop a 3D model unit of cardiac muscle: an in-vitro analog of the trabeculae carneae found in vivo. As a base hydrogel matrix for cardiomyocyte culture in 3D, we develop a blend of decellularized extracellular matrix (dECM) and fibrin. Thi ...

Diverse cell therapy approaches constitute prime developmental prospects for managing acute or degenerative cartilaginous tissue affections, synergistically complementing specific surgical solutions. Bone marrow stimulation (i.e., microfracture) remains a ...

Metal-coordinated hydrogels are physical hydrogels entirely crosslinked by complexes between ligand decorated polymers and metal ions. The mechanical properties of these hydrogels strongly depend on the density and dynamics of metal-coordinated interaction ...

Due to their selective crosslinking chemistry and well-defined mechano-biochemical characteristics, hydrogels crosslinked by thiol-Michael addition reactions have garnered immense interest for 3D cell culture applications. These hydrogels are typically for ...

In native tissues, the interaction between cells and the surrounding extracellular matrix (ECM) is reciprocal, as cells not only receive signals from the ECM but also actively remodel it through secretion of cell-derived ECM. However, very little is known ...

Cell therapy could be a solution for many diseases that currently pose a huge health burden on patients. Especially, cell therapies based on cell microencapsulation are of great interest. Immunoprotection of cells would allow to avoid the need for immunosu ...

In article number 2000733 by Juergen Brugger and co‐workers, a novel composite membrane of silk fibroin, microgels and magnetic nanoparticles whose permeability can be adjusted by temperature for controlled drug release is studied. The temperature induced ...

The bone marrow (BM) microenvironment, or niche, significantly affects behaviors of its resident stem cell populations. Disruptions in the BM niche contribute to a number of severe clinical pathologies. Discovery of novel therapeutic strategies for BM-rela ...

Biofabrication technologies, including stereolithography and extrusion-based printing, are revolutionizing the creation of complex engineered tissues. The current paradigm in bioprinting relies on the additive layer-by-layer deposition and assembly of repe ...

Over the past decade, methods to culture stem cells in three dimensions have opened up a plethora of new opportunities for basic and translational research in the life sciences. In particular, the use of natural extracellular matrix (ECM) surrogates, such ...

Nowadays, the development of cell therapy relies mainly on the advances made toward cell microencapsulation which allows to evade the need for immunosuppression during cell transplantation. Among the materials considered for cell encapsulation, hydrogels d ...

The production of hydrogel microspheres (MS) for cell immobilization, maintaining the favorable properties of alginate gels but presenting enhanced performance in terms of in vivo durability and physical properties, is desirable to extend the therapeutic p ...

Although stem cells hold tremendous potential for clinical applications, their in vitro manipulation remains very challenging. In vivo, stem cells reside in intricate 3D microenvironments, termed niche, in which many local and systemic extrinsic factors ar ...

The application of stem cells in drug screening and regenerative therapy has led to important advances in basic biology and biomedicine. Such strategies require high cell numbers and the efficient maturation into faithful functional organ or tissue units. ...

Replacing the gel-like central part of the intervertebral disc (IVD), so-called nucleus pulposus (NP), via a minimally invasive surgery is one of the most recent approaches in the lower back pain treatments. An appropriate biomaterial for NP replacement (N ...

Nucleus pulposus replacements have been subjected to highly controversial discussions over the last 40 years. Their use has not yet resulted in a positive outcome to treat herniated disc or degenerated disc disease. The main reason is that not a single imp ...
