Bone defects generate a worldwide high demand for bone repair and reconstruction. The incidence of bone defect repair in our aging society is expected to increase in the next decades. As bone auto- and allografting solutions often suffer from limited suppl ...

Permanent metallic implants, such as dental fillings and cardiac devices, generate streaks-like artefacts in computed tomography (CT) images. In this article, we propose a strategy to perform metal artefact reduction (MAR) that relies on the total variatio ...

A good fixation of osteosynthesis implants is crucial for a successful bone healing but often difficult to achieve in osteoporotic patients. One possible solution to this issue is the local delivery of bisphosphonates in direct proximity to the implants, A ...

A nanostructured coating layer on titanium implants, able to improve their integration into bones and to protect against the harsh conditions of body fluids, was obtained by Ion Plating Plasma Assisted, a method suitable for industrial applications. A tita ...

Background: orthopaedic surgeons often face clinical situations where improved screw holding power in cancellous bone is needed. Injectable calcium phosphate cements are one option to enhance fixation. Methods: paired screw pullout tests were undertaken in ...

Osteoporosis is a major health problem in our aging society. This metabolic disease, which is characterized by a deterioration of the bone microarchitecture and a significant loss of bone mass, is affecting a rising number of mostly elderly patients. The m ...

Implanted rat bones play a key role in studies involving fracture healing, bone diseases or drugs delivery among other themes. In most of these studies the implants integration also depends on the animal daily activity and musculoskeletal loads, which affe ...

Bisphosphonates are known for their strong inhibitory effect on bone resorption. Their influence on bone formation however is less clear. In this study we investigated the spatio-temporal effect of locally delivered Zoledronate on peri-implant bone formati ...

Atherosclerosis is the commonest and most important vascular disease. Andrographolide (AND) is the main bioactive component of the medicinal plant Andrographis paniculata and is used in traditional medicine. This study was aimed to evaluate the antiatherog ...

PURPOSE. We report on the in vivo testing of a novel noninvasively adjustable glaucoma drainage device (AGDD), which features an adjustable outflow resistance, and assess the safety and efficiency of this implant. METHODS. Under general anesthesia, the AGD ...

The invention relates to a replacement metallic prosthesis to be implanted which contains means monitor its condition during use in order to allow an early detection of failure or insufficient functionality, wherein said means comprise implanted sensors an ...

Patients with osteoporosis and joint disabilities represent a constant growing and challenging population to be treated in the musculoskeletal clinical field. Especially in the case of total hip arthroplasty, new solutions should be developed to compensate ...
