Nowadays, image and video are the data types that consume most of the resources of modern communication channels, both in fixed and wireless networks. Thus, it is vital to compress visual data as much as possible, while maintaining some target quality leve ...

In my thesis, I reveal several already-existing and emerging challenges in multi-objective management of multiprocessor systems, and address them through novel solutions, from heuristics to RL, depending on the complexity of the problem. Conventional multi ...

This paper presents a quality evaluation study of point cloud codecs that have been recently standardised by the MPEG committee. In particular, a subjective experiment to assess their performance in terms of bitrate against visual quality is designed and r ...

Real-time video transcoding has recently raised as a valid alternative to address the ever-increasing demand for video contents in servers' infrastructures in current multi-user environments. High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) makes efficient online trans ...

Guaranteeing interoperability between devices and applications is the core role of standards organizations. Since its first JPEG standard in 1992, the Joint Photographic Experts Group (JPEG) has published several image coding standards that have been succe ...

The increasing ubiquity of edge devices in the consumer market, along with their ever more computationally expensive workloads, necessitate corresponding increases in computing power to support such workloads. In-memory computing is attractive in edge devi ...

Full immersion inside a Virtual Reality (VR) scene requires six Degrees of Freedom (6DoF) applications where the user is allowed to perform translational and rotational movements within the virtual space. The implementation of 6DoF applications is however ...

The growing requirements for broadcasting and streaming of high quality video continue to trigger demands for codecs with higher compression efficiency. AV1 is the most recent open and royalty free video coding specification developed by Alliance for Open ...

A depth image provides partial geometric information of a 3D scene, namely the shapes of physical objects as observed from a particular viewpoint. This information is important when synthesizing images of different virtual camera viewpoints via depth-image ...

The emergence of video streaming applications, together with the users’ demand for high-resolution contents, has led to the development of new video coding standards, such as High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC). HEVC provides high efficiency at the cost of ...

The design of new streaming systems is becoming a major area of research to deploy services targeted in the Internet-of-Things (IoT) era. In this context, the new High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) standard provides high efficiency and scalability of qual ...

In a typical video rate allocation problem, the objective is to optimally distribute a source rate budget among a set of (in)dependently coded data units to minimize the total distortion. Conventional Lagrangian approaches convert the lone rate constraint ...

This paper presents shared-variable synchronization approaches for dataflow programming. The mechanisms do not require any substantial model of computation (MoC) modification, and is portable across both for hardware (HW) and software (SW) low-level code s ...

Multiview plus depth (MVD) is an emerging video format with many applications, including 3-D television and free viewpoint television. During the broadcast of a compressed MVD video, transmission errors may cause the loss of whole frames, resulting in sign ...

In free viewpoint video systems, where a user has the freedom to select a virtual view from which an observation image of the 3D scene is rendered, the scene is commonly represented by texture and depth images from multiple nearby viewpoints. In such repre ...

Over the last decades, several technological revolutions have impacted the television industry, such as the shifts from black & white to color and from standard to high-definition. Nevertheless, further considerable improvements can still be achieved to pr ...

Broadcast and broadband networks continue to be separate worlds in the video consumption business. Some initiatives such as HbbTV have built a bridge between both worlds, but its application is almost limited to providing links over the broadcast channel t ...

MPEG High Efficient Video Coding (HEVC) is likely to emerge as the video coding standard for HD and Ultra-HD TV resolutions. The two elements that push HEVC beyond the previous standards are a higher compression efficiency of about a factor of two, and the ...

In multiview video services, multiple cameras acquire the same scene from different perspectives, which results in correlated video streams. This generates large amounts of highly redundant data, which need to be properly handled during encoding and transm ...

After several generations of video coding standards, MPEG High Efficient Video Coding (HEVC) is likely to emerge as the video coding standards for HD and Ultra-HD TV. HEVC decoding is expected to be less computationally demanding and to provide a higher le ...
