The performance of machine learning algorithms is conditioned by the availability of training datasets, which is especially true for the field of nondestructive evaluation. Here we propose one reconfigurable specimen instead of numerous reference specimens ...

In this thesis, we conduct a comprehensive investigation into structural instabilities of both elastic and magneto-elastic beams and shells, resulting in a creative proposal to design a programmable braille reader. Methodologically, we combine numerical si ...

Here, we show that, in the developing spinal cord, after the early Wnt-mediated Tcf transcription activation that confers dorsal identity to neural stem cells, neurogenesis redirects beta-catenin from the adherens junctions to the nucleus to stimulate Tcfo ...

Dielectric elastomer actuator augmented aorta (DEA) represents a novel approach with high potential for assisting a failing heart. The soft tubular device replaces a section of the aorta and increases its diameter when activated. The hemodynamic interactio ...

While bottom-up synthesis allows for precise control over the properties of graphene nanoribbons (GNRs), the use of certain precursor molecules can result in edge defects, such as missing benzene rings that resemble a 'bite'. We investigate the adverse eff ...

Allocation of cells to an endodermal fate in the gastrulating embryo is driven by Nodal signaling and consequent activation of TGF beta pathway. In vitro methodologies striving to recapitulate the process of endoderm differentiation, however, use TGF beta ...

III-N light-emitting-diodes (LEDs) are subject of intense investigations, thanks to their high efficiency and great reliability. The quality of the semiconductor material has a significant impact on the electro-optical performance of LEDs: for this reason, ...

PUS3 encodes the pseudouridylate synthase 3, an enzyme catalyzing the formation of tRNA pseudouridine, which plays a critical role in tRNA structure, function, and stability. Biallelic pathogenic variants of PUS3 have been previously associated with severe ...

LaFeO3 (LFO) is recognized as a candidate material for solar water oxidation, but its photoelectrochemical response remains modest and stagnant. With the aim of advancing LFO photoanodes for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER), here, a nanorod array-type e ...

Imaging methods to capture the beating and developing heart inside embryonic animal models such as the zebrafish are a key component for the study of fundamental biological processes such as cardiac birth defects or tissue regeneration. However, live heart ...

TCF1 plays a critical role in T lineage commitment and the development of alpha beta lineage T cells, but its role in gamma delta T cell development remains poorly understood. Here, we reveal a regulatory axis where T cell receptor (TCR) signaling controls ...

Organoids are powerful models for studying tissue development, physiology, and disease. However, current culture systems disrupt the inductive tissue-tissue interactions needed for the complex morphogenetic processes of native organogenesis. Here, we show ...

BCL9 and PYGO are beta-catenin cofactors that enhance the transcription of Wnt target genes. They have been proposed as therapeutic targets to diminish Wnt signaling output in intestinal malignancies. Here we find that, in colorectal cancer cells and in de ...

Delamination is a well-known damage mode exhibited by laminated composites which has been extensively studied in unidirectional laminates (UD). In this work, a novel strategy consisting of the introduction of a small interlaminar defect to enhance the frac ...

We develop a scheme for finite-size corrections of vertical transition energies and single-particle energy levels involving defect states with built-in ionic polarization in supercell calculations. The method accounts on an equal footing for the screening ...

A central paradigm of self-assembly is to create ordered structures starting from molecular monomers that spontaneously recognize and interact with each other via noncovalent interactions. In recent years, great efforts have been directed toward perfecting ...

The growth of compound semiconductors on silicon has been widely sought after for decades, but reliable methods for defect-free combination of these materials have remained elusive. Recently, interconnected GaAs nanoscale membranes have been used as templa ...

Mutations in APC promote colorectal cancer (CRC) progression through uncontrolled WNT signaling. Patients with desmoplastic CRC have a significantly worse prognosis and do not benefit from chemotherapy, but the mechanisms underlying the differential respon ...

New types of metamaterials and architectured material require metallic materials with precise structural design in the microscale. However, additivemanufacturing of metallic structures in themicroscale has proven difficult, as the demand for the material q ...

Previous attempts to recapitulate embryogenesis in a developmentally relevant context started with aggregates composed of a few thousand ESCs, termed embryoid bodies (EB), that upon induction of differentiation reveal a surprising level of autonomous cell ...
