Navigation of drones is predominantly based on sensor fusion algorithms. Most of these algorithms make use of some form of Bayesian filtering with a majority employing an Extended Kalman Filter (EKF), wherein inertial measurements are fused with a Global N ...

Autonomous navigation of small UAVs is typically based on the integration of inertial navigation systems (INS) together with global navigation satellite systems (GNSS). However, GNSS signals can face various forms of interference affecting their continuous ...

The success of drone missions is incumbent on an accurate determination of the drone pose and velocity, which are collectively estimated by fusing iner- tial measurement unit and global navigation satellite system (GNSS) mea- surements. However, during a G ...

In airborne laser scanning a high-frequency trajectory solution is typically determined from inertial sensors and employed to directly geo-reference the acquired laser points. When low-cost MEMS inertial sensors are used, such as in lightweight unmanned ae ...

Safety-critical navigation applications require that estimation errors be reliably quantified and bounded. Over the last decade, significant effort has been put to guarantee a bounded position estimation by using Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) ...

The Vehicle Dynamic Model (VDM) based navigation of fixed-wing drones determines the airborne trajectory in conjunction with Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) sensors. Without Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) signals, this method estimates navigati ...

As one of the three most popular sports in the Summer Olympics, competitive swimming has always been an attractive subject of study for sports scientists. The intricate nature of the swimmer's movements and the variety of techniques have led coaches to req ...

Technical evaluation of swimming performance is an essential factor in preparing elite swimmers for their competitions. Inertial measurement units (IMUs) have attracted much attention recently because they can provide coaches with a detailed analysis of sw ...

Despite centuries of research and significant advances, the escapement mechanism used to count and maintain oscillations of mechanical time bases remains a complex mechanism and a major source of energy losses. We showed in previous work that, instead of t ...

This paper presents the design of a 60GHz Quadrature Digitally-Controlled Oscillator for a low-power Frequency-Modulated Continuous Wave radar System-on-Chip. The accurate detection of vital signs requires 1 and Q demodulation of the received signal. The q ...

Since the invention of the pendulum clock by Christiaan Huygens in 1657, precision timekeepers have been regulated by oscillators. Although the pendulum is not an isochronous oscillator, its introduction as a time basis for clock regulation led to a signif ...

Three-dimensional (3D) knee angle measurement is one of the key measures in human gait analysis. Inertial sensor capable of measuring joint motion under unconstrained conditions is a practical tool for clinical evaluation and rehabilitation. An inertial me ...

The recent adoption of silicon components by the mechanical watch industry has triggered the search for new time bases to advantageously replace the traditional balance and hairspring oscillator. In particular, flexure-based oscillators manufactured in sil ...

It appears that the concerted efforts of the watchmaking industry are leading towards a limit in mechanical watch accuracy. The general consensus in horology is that the time base's quality factor, a dimensionless number that characterizes the oscillator d ...

Mechanical oscillator (1) for a timepiece comprising an inertial mass (3) arranged to oscillate about a neutral position under the effect of a restoring force provided by at least one elastic element (5),characterised in that said mechanical oscillator (1) ...

In 1851 Léon Foucault created a sensation with his pendulum providing a direct demonstration of the turning of the Earth. This simple device consists of a pendulum which is launched in a purely planar orbit. Following Mach's principle of inertia, the mass ...

Oscillator system (1) comprising:- a substantially planar frame (3);- a first sub-oscillator (5), a second sub-oscillator (7), a third sub-oscillator (9), and a fourth sub-oscillator (11), each sub-oscillator (5, 7, 9, 11) comprising a substantially rigid ...

The Foucault pendulum provides a demonstration of the turning of the Earth. The principle at work is that linear oscillations of a two-degree-of-freedom isotropic harmonic oscillator remain unchanged in an inertial frame of reference, so appear to precess ...

Crank arrangement (1) for driving a pin-driven two degrees? of freedom mechanical oscillator (5), comprising:- a crank element (7) arranged to be rotationally driven about an axis of rotation (19) by means of a mechanical source of energy (M),- a crank slo ...

Background: Sit-to-stand and stand-to-sit transitions are frequent daily functional tasks indicative of muscle power and balance performance. Monitoring these postural transitions with inertial sensors provides an objective tool to assess mobility in both ...
