The digitization of timber construction, the emergence of engineered wood products, and the urgent need to drastically reduce buildings' environmental impact have given a rebirth to wood as a construction material. On the one hand, increasing the use of ti ...

With the increasing use of automation and computer-aided manufacturing in timber construction, a standardized timber construction system using digitally produced wood-wood connections has recently been developed for basic building components. Its structura ...

Design of Integrally-Attached Timber Plate Structures outlines a new design methodology for digitally fabricated spatial timber plate structures, presented with examples from recent construction projects. It proposes an innovative and sustainable design me ...

This paper presents an integrated design tool for structures composed of engineered timber panels that are connected by traditional wood joints. Recent advances in computational architecture have permitted to automate the fabrication and assembly of such s ...

Currently, the Swiss timber industry in mountain areas largely exports unprocessed lumber and imports finished timber products due to the lack of digital tools. By using new digital design-to-production workflows, it is possible to investigate new building ...

Traditional wood-wood connections, widely used in the past, have been progressively replaced by steel fasteners and bonding processes in modern timber constructions. However, the emergence of digital fabrication and innovative engineered timber products ha ...

The rise of digital fabrication has increased the use of wood-wood connections inspired by traditional carpentry in modern timber constructions. With recent developments on standard construction systems, the mechanical behavior of such joints for in-plane ...

This paper presents a digital joinery generation method for whole-timber structures using wood-wood connections. The research is based on a collaboration with a local timber company located in a mountain area [1]. In this context, there is a need to explor ...

The seismic performance of buildings depends critically on the stiffness and strength of storey diaphragms. Whilst for modern reinforced concrete or steel structures the connection between floors and lateral resisting members is often assumed as monolithic ...

Timber construction plays an important role in architectural history, in modern construction methods and in sustainable design, for which wood-only joinery techniques have been used for centuries. Traditional joinery typologies are the product of successiv ...

Timber plate structures with integral mechanical attachments have been successfully built in the last decades. Previous research has highlighted the influence of these connections in the global behavior of the structures. Double-layered plate shells are on ...

This paper is focused on the structural design of an innovative wood-wood connection designed for a full-scale double-layered timber folded-plate structure: the new Vidy theatre pavilion (Lausanne, Switzerland). Investigations into the potential of these n ...

In the field of timber load-bearing structures, adhesive bonding is a promising joining technique that may increase the structural stiffness and capacity of timber joints and structures. The use of ductile adhesives may furthermore allow designing ductile ...

In the field of timber engineering, adhesive bonding remains a promising, though poorly developed, joining technique that may increase the structural stiffness and capacity of timber joints and structures. Selecting ductile adhesives may further allow to c ...

In structural engineering, folded surface structures present one of the concepts for construction of self supporting column free systems. They utilize structural benefits of folding to achieve material saving and improve structural efficiency. The folding ...

This article presents a new lightweight construction system for doubly curved shells made from timber plates, inspired by the masonry vaults of Eladio Dieste. The system was developed for a specific case-study project, and general applications to other fre ...

Integral Mechanical Attachment (IMA) uses features in the form of components for their connection. In addition to the transfer of forces, locator features are used as integral assembly guides. Prismatic, single-degree-of-freedom (1DOF) joints only allow fo ...

Wood/timber has been widely used for house and bridge construction. It is a widely available natural material that necessitates low energy for the production, following simple processes. The environmentally friendliness, together with the low cost of raw m ...

Timber folded plate Structures combine the advantages of timber as a construction material, such as its carbon-dioxide storage, low energy production and favorable weight-to-strength ratio, with the structural efficiency and elegance of folded surface stru ...
