Vibrational fingerprints of molecules and lowdimension materials can be traced with subnanometer resolution by performing Tip-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (TERS) in a localization of light in the plasmonic nanocavity of the STM enables high spatial resoluti ...

4-D acoustic imaging via an array of 32 sources/32 receivers is used to monitor hydraulic fracture (HF) propagating in a 250 mm cubic specimen under a true-triaxial state of stress. We present a method based on the arrivals of diffracted waves to reconstru ...

Projection-based reduced order models (ROM) based on the weak form and the strong form of the discontinuous Galerkin (DG) method are proposed and compared for shock-dominated problems. The incorporation of dissipation components of DG in a consistent manne ...

Seeing and recognizing an object whose size is much smaller than the illumination wavelength is a challenging task for an observer placed in the far field, due to the diffraction limit. Recent advances in near- and far-field microscopy have offered several ...

Laser polishing (LP) is a process that allows a significant reduction of the surface roughness of a metal workpiece via re-melting a shallow layer of material. However, the practical use of LP is limited due to the difficulty of satisfying the high surface ...

Nowadays, diffractive optical elements are used for a variety of applications because of their high design flexibility, compact size, and mass productivity. At the same time, they require having high and complex optical functionalities such as a large numb ...

We study preheating following Higgs inflation in the Palatini formulation of gravity. We numerically evolve perturbations of the radial mode of the Higgs field and that of three scalars modeling the gauge bosons. We compare the two non-perturbative mechani ...

In this article, we propose a novel approach for the localization of electromagnetic interference (EMI) sources based on the concept of compressive sensing and metalenses. We show that using the spatial and frequency dispersion offered by the metalens, we ...

In this work we demonstrate the advantages of investigating diffractive optical elements in the phase domain. In this regime we can detect features that are not restrained by the diffraction limit and relate them to the geometrical and optical properties o ...

Microsphere-assisted microscopy allows the limit of the diffraction of light to overcome while being non-invasive, full-field, label-free, and easy-to-implement. However, the observation of translucent samples remains difficult using a classical bright-fie ...

Koopmans spectral functionals aim to describe simultaneously ground-state properties and charged excitations of atoms, molecules, nanostructures, and periodic crystals. This is achieved by augmenting standard density functionals with simple but physically ...

The degradation of the superelastic properties of a commercial NiTi alloy is studied during uniaxial, biaxial and load-path-change cycling performed in-situ with synchrotron X-ray diffraction. Careful examination of the diffraction pattern during uniaxial ...

Optical retrieval of the structure of transparent objects at the nano-scale requires adapted methods capable of probing their interaction with suitable light. Scattering events, for instance, depend on the content and the arrangement of the medium encounte ...

Resonant waveguide gratings (RWGs), also known as guided mode resonant (GMR) gratings or waveguide-mode resonant gratings, are dielectric structures where these resonant diffractive elements benefit from lateral leaky guided modes and can operate from UV t ...

A physics and engineering analysis of alternative divertor configurations is carried out by examining benefits and problems by comparing the baseline single null solution with a Snowflake, an X- and a Super-X divertor. It is observed that alternative confi ...

Homodyne X-ray diffraction signals produced by classical light and classical detectors are given by the modulus square of the charge density in momentum space vertical bar sigma(q)vertical bar(2), missing its phase, which is required in order to invert the ...

Light coupling in waveguides has been extensively investigated in a variety of contexts, from photonic integrated circuits to biosensing and near-eye displays for augmented reality. Here, narrowband diffraction is reported using a Fano interference effect ...

X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD)-based quantitative phase analysis is a common technique for studying the hydration of cementitious systems. Hydrated cements often comprise several amorphous or nanocrystalline phases. This paper presents a protocol for the ...

Rechargeable potassium (K) batteries are a promising next-generation technology for low-cost grid scale energy storage applications. Nevertheless, the undesirable interfacial instabilities originating from the interplay between the employed separators and ...

On-chip optical tweezers based on evanescent fields overcome the diffraction limit of the free-space optical tweezers and can be a promising technique for developing lab-on-a-chip devices. While such trapping allows for low-cost and precise manipulation, i ...
