Performance tuning is a pervasive challenge in science and engineering, involving optimization of expensive black-box functions to achieve desired outcomes. This thesis focuses on Bayesian optimization (BO) as a promising solution for addressing the comple ...

The adoption of photovoltaic panels (PV) by households is essential to meet residential Swiss energy transition targets. While previous studies have mostly focused on the factors influencing PV adoption by comparing adopters with non-adopters, few have ack ...

The decarbonization of the built environment requires rapid growth in energy storage solutions due to the intermittent nature of most renewable energy sources. This paper focuses on the efficacy of so-called energy tunnels (i.e., tunnels equipped with pipe ...

Photoelectrochemical (PEC) systems are promising approaches for sustainable fuel processing. PEC devices, like conventional photovoltaic-electrolyzer (PV-EC) systems, utilize solar energy for splitting water into hydrogen and oxygen. Contrary to PV-EC syst ...

Bianisotropic metasurfaces empower planarized optical components with subwavelength thicknesses that are not amenable to conventional optics. In particular, bianisotropy gives control over the spatial dispersion and allows engineering of both spectral and ...

A continuous production prototype for scaling up the synthesis of a graphene oxide/multi-walled carbon nanotubes (GO/MWCNTs) composite as a hydrogen storage material has been proposed in this study. This prototype consists of an automatic feeding and mixin ...

Magnetic field effects on electrocatalysis have recently gained attention due to the substantial enhancement of the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) on ferromagnetic catalysts. When detecting an enhanced catalytic activity, the effect of magnetic fields on ...

The development of mechanical models relating the state of strains and the resistance of reinforced concrete structures has become a trend in the last decades. These types of models are referred to as strain-based approaches. Since strain-based approaches ...

Ozone is a commonly applied disinfectant and oxidantin drinkingwater and has more recently been implemented for enhanced municipalwastewater treatment for potable reuse and ecosystem protection. Onedrawback is the potential formation of bromate, a possible ...

The subthreshold swing (SS) of MOSFETs decreases with temperature and then saturates below a critical temperature. Hopping conduction via the band tail has been proposed as the possible cause for the SS saturation. On the other hand, numerical simulations ...

With the energy transition and CO2 emissions reduction as a priority on the international policy agenda, governments worldwide are trying to engage the population in investing in renewable energies. In this paper, we study the role of information access an ...

Fossil fuels and materials on Earth are a finite resource and the disposal of waste into the air, on land, and into water has an impact on our environment on a global level. Using Switzerland as an example, the energy demand and the technical challenges, a ...

This paper intends to provide quantitative seismic response characteristics of steel moment resisting frames (MRFs) with inelastic beam-to-column panel zone joints. Two modeling approaches are proposed for this purpose along with a methodology to consider ...

Bi2WO6 is considered an effective photocatalyst, even under the visible part of the solar spectrum, and recent advances in the modification of its structure leave promise for harnessing its enhanced effectiveness. Our experimental E. coli disinfection resu ...

Urban mobility services face the challenge of planning their operations efficiently while complying with user preferences. In this paper, we introduce a new mathematical model called a choice-driven dial-a-ride problem (CD-DARP) which is a generalization o ...

In this article, a low-power, radiation-hard front-end circuit for monolithic pixel sensors, designed to meet the requirements of low noise and low pixel-to-pixel variability, the key features to achieve high detection efficiencies, is presented. The senso ...

Mechano-electric feedbacks (MEFs), which model how mechanical stimuli are transduced into electrical signals, have received sparse investigation by considering electromechanical simulations in simplified scenarios. In this paper, we study the effects of di ...

To answer the growing demand for data computing, data storage and data transmission, the current trend is to construct centralized hyperscale data centers, whose power usage effectiveness (PUE) has substantially improved in recent years. Still, the operati ...

A new mixed-dimension coupling method is formulated for members with (bi-symmetric) wide flange cross sections based on the idea of least squares transformations between two sets of point clouds. This coupling method imposes the minimum number of constrain ...

Penalty methods have proven to be particularly effective for achieving the required C-1-continuity in the context of multi patch isogeometric Kirchhoff-Love shells. Due to their conceptual simplicity, these algorithms are readily applicable to the displace ...
