MALTA is a depleted monolithic active pixel sensor (DMAPS) developed in the Tower Semiconductor 180-nm CMOS imaging process. Monolithic CMOS sensors offer advantages over current hybrid imaging sensors in terms of both increased tracking performance due to ...

An attempt is made to translate five generic key performance indicators (KPIs) into a continuous real-time cost function in a batch order-based manufacturing environment. The challenge of controlling and optimizing resource utilization, production efficien ...

Helicon current drive (CD), also called fast wave CD in the lower hybrid range of frequencies, has long been regarded as a promising CD tool for reactor grade plasmas. A newly installed MW-level system at DIII-D will be the first test of this technology in ...

Run-time profiling of software applications is key to energy efficiency. Even the most optimized hardware combined to an optimally designed software may become inefficient if operated poorly. Moreover, the diversification of modern computing platforms and ...

The current lack of adapted performance metrics leads clinicians to focus on what children with cerebral palsy (CP) do in a clinical setting, despite the ongoing debate on whether capacity (what they do at best) adequately reflects performance (what they d ...

Starting with Upgrade 1 in 2021, LHCb will move to a purely software-based trigger system. Therefore, the new trigger strategy is to process events at the full rate of 30MHz. Given that the increase of CPU performance has slowed down in recent years, the p ...

Our work addresses the problem of placement of threads, or virtual cores, onto physical cores in a multicore NUMA system. Different placements result in varying degrees of contention for shared resources, so choosing the right placement can have a large ef ...

In this paper we tackle the problem of finding the source of a gaseous leak with a robot in a three-dimensional (3-D) physical space. The proposed method extends the operational range of the probabilistic Infotaxis algorithm [1] into 3-D and makes multiple ...

Nanoplasmonic structures can tightly confine light onto a material's surface to probe biomolecular interactions not easily accessed by other sensing techniques. New and exciting developments in nanofabrication processes, nano-optical trapping, graphene dev ...

Key-Value (K-V) stores are an integral building block in modern datacenter applications. With byteaddressable persistent memory (PM) technologies, such as Intel/Micron's 3D XPoint, on the horizon, there has been an influx of new high performance K-V stores ...

An automatic real-time alignment and calibration strategy of the LHCb detector was developed for the Run II. Thanks to the online calibration, tighter event selection criteria can be used in the trigger. Furthermore, the online calibration facilitates the ...

The DeSyRe project builds on-demand adaptive and reliable Systems-on-Chips (SoCs). As fabrication technology scales down, chips are becoming less reliable, thereby incurring increased power and performance costs for fault tolerance. To make matters worse, ...

In the early phases of the building design process, decisions are made on certain geometrical parameters, which strongly dictate the future performance of the building. To support decision- making, an understanding of the relation between design parameters ...

The first ITER Main Busbar (MBCN1) and Correction Busbar (CBCN1) conductor samples were manufactured in ASIPP and tested in the SULTAN facility. This paper introduces the sample manufacture, including strand, cabling, jacketing and sample preparation, and ...

Five different Hall Effect sensors were modeled and their performance evaluated using a three dimensional simulator. The physical structure of the implemented sensors reproduces a certain technological fabrication process. Hall voltage, absolute, current-r ...

LaTiO2N photoanodes for solar water splitting were prepared by electrophoretic deposition and demonstrated the best photo-currents ever reported for this material. Further important enhancement of the performance was obtained by the use of a sputtered In2O ...

Manycore chips are emerging as the architecture of choice to provide power efficiency and improve performance, while riding Moore’s Law. In these architectures, on-chip interconnects play a pivotal role in ensuring power and performance scalability. As sup ...

Schizophrenia is a severe mental disorder that impairs individuals’ life, often chronically and from early adulthood on. There is a search for endophenotypes, i.e. stable markers of the genetic underpinnings of the disease. Visual backward masking (VBM) is ...

The ability to accurately and concisely describe the performance of complex fenestration systems (CFS) is essential to their effective implementation into the building industry. CFS are a diverse category of daylighting technologies that manipulate the lig ...

Significant achievements have been made for automated allocation of cloud resources. However, the performance of applications may be poor in peak load periods, unless their cloud resources are dynamically adjusted. Moreover, although cloud resources dedica ...
