Global ideal MHD stability of plasmas with toroidal, helical and vertical field coils

Résumé

A simple configuration that consists of a set of toroidal, helical and vertical field coils is used to calculate free boundary equilibria with non-zero plasma current and approximately helically symmetric plasma boundary shape. The amount of helical boundary deformation is controlled by the ratio of the current in the helical field coils to the current in the toroidal field coils. When this ratio is increased, the (m, n) = (2, 1) external kink is stabilized at beta similar or equal to 1% for inverse rotational transform profiles in the region q < 2 and an aspect ratio A similar or equal to 10.

Plasma stability

The stability of a plasma is an important consideration in the study of plasma physics. When a system containing a plasma is at equilibrium, it is possible for certain parts of the plasma to be disturbed by small perturbative forces acting on it. The stability of the system determines if the perturbations will grow, oscillate, or be damped out. In many cases, a plasma can be treated as a fluid and its stability analyzed with magnetohydrodynamics (MHD).

Magnetic helicity

In plasma physics, magnetic helicity is a measure of the linkage, twist, and writhe of a magnetic field. In ideal magnetohydrodynamics, magnetic helicity is conserved. When a magnetic field contains magnetic helicity, it tends to form large-scale structures from small-scale ones. This process can be referred to as an inverse transfer in Fourier space. This second property makes magnetic helicity special: three-dimensional turbulent flows tend to "destroy" structure, in the sense that large-scale vortices break up into smaller and smaller ones (a process called "direct energy cascade", described by Lewis Fry Richardson and Andrey Nikolaevich Kolmogorov).
