Enterprises collect data in large volumes and leverage them to drive numerous concurrent decisions and business processes. Their teams deploy multiple applications that often operate concurrently on the same data and infrastructure but have widely differen ...

The governing hydrological processes are expected to shift under climate change in the alpine regions of Switzerland. This raises the need for more adaptive and accurate methods to estimate river flow. In high-altitude catchments influenced by snow and gla ...

Direct air capture using solid adsorbents is a proven technology critical to reducing our net greenhouse gas emissions to zero and beyond. Currently, academic research into the technology mainly focuses on the devel-opment of new adsorbents. However, there ...

Database workloads have significantly evolved in the past twenty years. Traditional database systems that are mainly used to serve Online Transactional Processing (OLTP) workloads evolved into specialized database systems that are optimized for particular ...

We use homeostasis, the maintenance of steady states in an organism, to explain some of the decisions made by participants in a business process. We use Vickers’ Appreciative System to model the homeostatic states with Harel’s statecharts. We take the exam ...

Database systems access memory either sequentially or randomly. Contrary to sequential access and despite the extensive efforts of computer architects, compiler writers, and system builders, random access to data larger than the processor cache has been s ...

Our work addresses the problem of placement of threads, or virtual cores, onto physical cores in a multicore NUMA system. Different placements result in varying degrees of contention for shared resources, so choosing the right placement can have a large ef ...

The capability of a previously proposed VDM (vehicle dynamic model) based navigation method for UAVs is assessed in attitude determination without IMU data. This method utilizes the VDM as main process model within the navigation filter and treats data fro ...

The performance monitoring of computer systems is a complex affair, made even more challenging by the increasing gap between hardware and software. Methods that collect and feed data to performance analysis can usually be classified into one of two groups. ...

The vision brought forth by Michael Hammer in the late 1980s was to save struggling American companies by getting them to focus on the creation of value for clients by reorganizing their operations and structure around the use of IT systems. This was the B ...

Modern hardware is abundantly parallel and increasingly heterogeneous. The numerous processing cores have non-uniform access latencies to the main memory and processor caches, which causes variability in the communication costs. Unfortunately, database sys ...

The explosive growth in digital data and its growing role in real-time analytics motivate the design of high-performance database management systems (DBMSs). Meanwhile, slowdown in supply voltage scaling has stymied improvements in core performance and ush ...

Instruction-supplymechanisms, namely the branch predictors and instruction prefetchers, exploit recurring control flow in an application to predict the applicationâ s future control flow and provide the core with a useful instruction stream to execute in ...

Hardware trends oblige software to overcome three major challenges against systems scalability: (1) taking advantage of the implicit/vertical parallelism within a core that is enabled through the aggressive micro-architectural features, (2) exploiting the ...

Software packet-processing platforms- - network devices running on general-purpose servers-- are emerging as a compelling alternative to the traditional high-end switches and routers running on specialized hardware. Their promise is to enable the fast dep ...

Inexact and approximate circuit design is a promising approach to improve performance and energy efficiency in technology-scaled and low-power digital systems. Such strategy is suitable for error-tolerant applications involving perceptive or statistical ou ...

Many analytics applications generate mixed workloads, i.e., workloads comprised of analytical tasks with different processing characteristics including data pre-processing, SQL, and iterative machine learning algorithms. Examples of such mixed workloads ca ...

In the development of energy and chemical processes, the process engineers extensively apply computer aided methods to design & optimise these processes and corresponding process units. Such applications are multi-scale modelling and multi-objective optimi ...

Designing scalable transaction processing systems on modern hardware has been a challenge for almost a decade. Hardware trends oblige software to overcome three major challenges against systems scalability: (1) Exploiting the abundant thread-level parallel ...

Instruction set extensions (ISEs) improve the performance and energy consumption of application-specific processors. ISEs can use architecturally visible storage (AVS), localized compiler-controlled memories, to provide higher I/O bandwidth than reading da ...
