The production of hydrogel microspheres (MS) for cell immobilization, maintaining the favorable properties of alginate gels but presenting enhanced performance in terms of in vivo durability and physical properties, is desirable to extend the therapeutic p ...

We evaluated whether the genetic background of embryonic stem cells (ESCs) affects the properties suitable for three-dimensional (3D) synthetic scaffolds for cell self-renewal. Inbred R1 and hybrid B6D2F1 mouse ESC lines were cultured for 7 days in hydroge ...

The development of multifunctional encapsulation biomaterials could help the translation of cell‐based therapies into standard medical care. One of the major hurdles in the field of encapsulated cell transplantation is the current lack of materials present ...

We continue the study of renewal contact processes initiated in a companion paper, where we showed that if the tail of the interarrival distribution mu is heavier than t(-alpha) for some alpha < 1 (plus auxiliary regularity conditions) then the critical va ...

High-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy data reveal evidence of a crossover from one-dimensional (1D) to three-dimensional (3D) behavior in the prototypical charge density wave (CDW) material NbSe3. In the low-temperature 3D regime, gaps ...

In native tissues, the interaction between cells and the surrounding extracellular matrix (ECM) is reciprocal, as cells not only receive signals from the ECM but also actively remodel it through secretion of cell-derived ECM. However, very little is known ...

Replacing the gel-like central part of the intervertebral disc (IVD), so-called nucleus pulposus (NP), via a minimally invasive surgery is one of the most recent approaches in the lower back pain treatments. An appropriate biomaterial for NP replacement (N ...

The significance of matricellular proteins during development and cancer progression is widely recognized. However, how these proteins actively contribute to physiological development and pathological cancer progression is only partially elucidated. In thi ...

The application of stem cells in drug screening and regenerative therapy has led to important advances in basic biology and biomedicine. Such strategies require high cell numbers and the efficient maturation into faithful functional organ or tissue units. ...

The recapitulation of tissue organization and function in vitro is one of the main objectives of tissue engineering. Proper tissue function depends on the spatial assembly and interactions between key components such as cells, growth factors, signaling cue ...

We used Optical Coherence Microscopy (OCM) to monitor structural and functional changes due to ischemic stroke in small animals brains in vivo. To obtain lateral resolution of 2.2 μm over the range of 600 μm we used extended focus configuration of OCM inst ...

During wound healing, the distribution, availability, and signaling of growth factors (GFs) are orchestrated by their binding to extracellular matrix components in the wound microenvironment. Extracellular matrix proteins have been shown to modulate angiog ...

Cancer immunotherapy with immune checkpoint inhibitors (CPIs) and interleukin-2 (IL-2) has demonstrated clinical efficacy but is frequently accompanied with severe adverse events caused by excessive and systemic immune system activation. Here, we addressed ...

The application of hydrogels as load-bearing biomedical components is often limited by their mechanical properties. Often an attempt to improve a hydrogel's stiffness is accompanied by a loss of toughness and swelling properties. In this work, we show that ...

With proper control over copolymer design and solvation conditions, self-assembled materials display impressive morphological variety that encompasses nanoscale colloids as well as bulk three-dimensional architectures. Here we take advantage of both hydrop ...
